MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women’s lacrosse team and head coach Meghan Smith have announced the Hawks’ schedule for the upcoming 2018 season, which features a two-game trip to Florida in early March and seven matchups against teams ranked in the preseason top-20 by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association (IWLCA).
The Hawks will open the season against first-time opponent and No. 12-ranked Mercy in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. on Saturday, Feb. 24 prior to the trip to Florida. In conference play, Saint Anselm will play seven of its 13 Northeast-10 Conference games on its home turf of Grappone Stadium. Missing the NE10 Championship by narrow margins the past two seasons, the Hawks look to earn a postseason spot in 2018.
“Our team is very excited to start the 2018 season,” said Smith. “We have been working hard this offseason to prepare for what we expect to be another challenging and competitive season. We start off the season with three competitive non-conference games and our hope is that those games prepare us for a great season of NE10 lacrosse.”
On their trip to Florida, the Hawks will play No. 6-ranked Florida Tech on the Panthers’ home turf on Saturday, March 3 and face first-time opponent Georgian Court at Saint Leo University two days later. It is the second-straight season that Saint Anselm will face a nationally-ranked Florida Tech team, which defeated the Hawks, 14-7, to open 2017.
Saint Anselm, which was picked eighth in the NE10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll, begins conference play with two-straight home games in mid-March against Southern Connecticut State and Saint Michael’s. The Hawks close the month with a trip to American International, a cross-town battle at Southern New Hampshire and a home game against Bentley.
The Hawks have an even split of away and home games for their eight games in April. The April schedule includes an away matchup with 2017 NCAA semifinalist and preseason No. 4-ranked Le Moyne as well as a home game against 2017 NE10 and NCAA Division II champions Adelphi, the preseason No.1 team in the country. Also during the month, Saint Anselm travels to Merrimack and No. 17-ranked Stonehill and hosts Franklin Pierce and No. 18-ranked Pace.
Saint Anselm will host its annual Teal the Field game during a home matchup against Assumption on Saturday, April 14. Raising money to support Ovations for the Cure and Ovarian Cancer research, the Hawks will be sporting t-shirts that will be sold throughout the week prior on the Hilltop.
The Hawks conclude the regular season with a trip to 2017 NE10 semifinalist and preseason No. 8-ranked New Haven on Saturday, April 28. Falling to the No. 8-ranked Chargers by only one goal in 2017, Saint Anselm aims to top New Haven for the first time since the 2007 season.
