Blazers, MegaWhales Open With Wins

Emala’s 8-point debut night keys defending champs

A six-goal run early in the second half allowed the defending-champion Blazers to hold a comfortable lead in Boston Box Lacrosse League action and allowed the team to cruise to a 14-5 opening-night win over PrimeTime. Davey Emala, playing in his first BBLL game, racked up four goals and four assists on the night to lead the way, with Garrett Naimie adding a hat trick and Marty Bowes, James Fahey and Brandon Dube each scoring twice; Bowes added three assists to finish with 5 points.

PrimeTime kept the game close early, but had a hard time getting its offense clicking and beating Blazers goalie Joe Evans, who stopped 36 shots to backstop the win. Johnathan DeAngelis scored twice for PrimeTime.

In the season’s opening game – and with the German National Men’s lacrosse team in the stands cheering – the MegaWhales downed the Minutemen 14-8. The Wahes scored the game’s first five games and while the Minutemen cut the lead to 3 in the second half, they never got any closer.

Mike Maggio scored three goals and had three helpers to lead the MegaWhales on the night, but Mark White, Jake Rotman, Dan Hettler, Henry Graves and Tim Towler all had multiple points for the winners, who also got 9 loose balls and 42 saves from goalie Chris Hettler. Chris Hettler coaches with the German National Team, and with the team currently touring the U.S. and in attendance, he had a built-in cheering section.

Bryce Serriello and Ryan Murphy led the Minutemen; Serriello scored 5 goals and put 19 shots on net. Murphy corralled 14 loosies and added two assists and two caused turnovers on the night.

The BBLL returns to action on Oct. 17, with the MegaWhales playing PrimeTime in the opener and with Bullseye getting its first action on the season in the nightcap against the Minutemen.
