New England’s premier men’s box league opens sixth season in Hingham
The Boston Box Lacrosse League – the leading adult men’s box lacrosse league in the northeastern United States — will begin fall-winter play on October 10 at the South Shore Sports Center in Hingham, Mass., with five teams competing in a season that ends Feb. 13 with its annual championship game.
With five teams and more professional-level and former top college players than ever before, the league expects to have its most-cutthroat season ever.
“We can’t wait to get started on another season; the quality of play keeps going up, the rivalries in this league are well-established and the 2017-18 season should be harder fought and more competitive than ever,” said Randy Fraser, the league’s founder. “Our games always seem to be close, and the difference between first- and last-place teams never seems to be more than a few goals, because you’re looking at 100 of the best players in the Boston area going at it.”
This is the third year when the league is playing a combined fall-winter season, with each team playing 12 regular-season games, prior to two weeks of playoffs.
All five teams – the defending-champion Blazers, Bullseye, MegaWhales, Minutemen and PrimeTime – are organized and run by their captains, so players who want to run in the league must get a spot from a team captain. Players interested in joining the BBLL but who don’t know the captains or who haven’t been invited onto a roster should contact the league by e-mail. Player details are shared regularly with the team captains.
“We’re always looking for players,” Fraser said, “and trying to make it so that more players can run here. We find spots for as many players as possible, and hope someday to be able to expand so that we can accept even more players.”
Boston Box Lacrosse League games are at 9 and 10 p.m. each week, with vacation weeks at Christmas and New Year dedicated to holiday pick-up games for regulars, players who want to try the box game and for college players home for the holidays.
The 2017-18 schedule is now available on bostonboxlax.com; team rosters will be online as soon as captains finalize their teams. Once games start, standings and statistics will be updated weekly.
