Boston Cannons Announce 23-Man Protected Roster for 2018

Highlighted by the recent signing of All-Star Kyle Denhoff from the MLL Player Movement

BOSTON, MA (October 2, 2017) –   The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse, the premier outdoor professional lacrosse league, announced today their 23-man roster protected list for the 2018 MLL season. The announcement is highlighted by the recent signing of All-Star midfielder Kyle Denhoff from the MLL Player Movement.

Denhoff played for the Rochester Rattlers his last five seasons before entering Player Movement in September. Denhoff was one of sixteen players who filed for Player Movement before September 22. As compensation, the Cannons will be sending a fifth-round collegiate draft pick to Rochester. The two-time MLL All-Star is currently a Boston resident who is excited to begin the second half of his career here with the Cannons.

“I’m very excited to be joining the Boston Cannons organization,” said Denhoff. “I look forward to meeting my new teammates and coaching staff. After moving to Boston in 2015, I fell in love with the city and am excited to represent the Cannons on and off the field.”

Denhoff played collegiately from 2009 to 2012 at St. John Fisher College, where he had 132 goals and 48 assists in 66 career games. He made his MLL debut in 2013 with Rochester and remained there for five seasons, scoring 47 goals, 3 two-point goals, and 12 assists for a total of 62 points. He is coming off a 15-point season with eleven goals, one two-pointer, and three assists. The Cannons are hoping Denhoff, 6-0 and 190 pounds, will add some strength and offense to the midfield unit.

“We are thrilled to welcome Kyle Denhoff to the Cannons family,” stated Cannons Head Coach Sean Quirk. “Kyle is a proven two-way midfielder in the league and has been an MLL All-Star twice already. His blue-collar work ethic, character, leadership and style of play is going to be of tremendous value to our culture and success on the field this coming season.”

Last week, the Cannons locked up five key players for 2018 in attackman Davey Emala, midfielder Justin Turri, face-off specialist Joe Nardella, defenseman Mitch Belisle, and goalie Tyler Fiorito. Emala and Turri signed a one-year deal while Nardella, Belisle, and Fiorito will be returning for the second year of their two-year deals. On Friday, the Cannons also traded for Goalie Tom Carey from Denver in exchange for a 4th round supplemental draft pick.

“We are extremely excited about the 23-Man roster that we have put together going into the 2018 season,” said Coach Quirk. “We had some difficult decisions to make while putting together this roster. At this point, however, we feel that the experience that many of our first and second year players gained will pay off big in 2018.”

All players left unprotected will be entered in the player pool for the 2018 season. The MLL Supplemental Draft is Friday, December 8th and the Cannons have the first overall pick. Each team will have the opportunity to fill the remainder of their 40-man training camp rosters during the supplemental draft in preparation for training camp. The final opportunity for the Cannons to build out their roster will be the 2018 Collegiate Draft where the Cannons again have the first overall pick. A date and time are still to be determined.

MLL training camps will begin in late March, with a 25-man active roster and 6-man practice squad to be determined the week before the first games are played. The MLL season will commence in April.
