New England’s top men’s box league holds combine for potential pros
The Boston Box Lacrosse League, in an effort to help find and develop next-level talent, is holding its first-ever “American combine” in Hingham, Mass., on Sept. 23 and 24.
Players will go through six hours of training and play led by Boston Box founder Randy Fraser, a former coach/assistant GM for the Boston Blazers, who ran the NLL combine during his time in the pro league. Fraser and his coaches will put players through their paces.
The opening session is from 1 – 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, at South Shore Sports Center in Hingham, Mass. – the BBLL’s home arena — followed by two sessions on Sept. 24 from 8-10 a.m. and 1 – 3 p.m.
“As our league has evolved and put more players into NLL training camps, Randy and I have been asked by our pro contacts about how to identify and develop more American prospects, and we think the combine is a first step to doing that,” said Chuck Jaffe, Fraser’s partner in the BBLL and the organizer of the combine. “Plenty of guys are interested in making the transition to box – the league hears from dozens of Americans every year – but they have little high-level experience playing real box. We’re hoping to find more players who could quickly move to the indoor game.”
The Boston Box Lacrosse League held the New England Black Wolves’ open tryout in 2016. Jaffe said the combine is a step up from that event, with more playing time for players to show their stuff.
The event is free to participants, but attendance is being strictly limited. Players hoping to be invited to fill one of the remaining spaces can contact Jaffe and Fraser at firstname.lastname@example.org.
