NEWTON, Mass. – The New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) is proud to honor long-time New England men’s lacrosse coach Peter Lasagna as this year’s “Walter Alessi Man of the Year” award winner.
Lasagna has nearly 35 years of coaching under his belt, split between Division 1 member Brown University, where he graduated from in 1982, and Division 3 institution Bates College, whom he has turned into a powerhouse on the regional and national stage.
During the 2017 season, his 17th year at the helm of the Bobcats, Lasagna guided Bates College to a 14-0 record to start the year, including a perfect 10-0 mark in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) regular season. The Bobcats made their seventh NESCAC tournament appearance under Lasagna, and their second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three years, reaching the national quarterfinals and finishing the year with a 16-2 record.
Lasagna was named 2017 NEILA Division 3 Co-Coach of the Year, his second time earning that award after being named both NEILA and NESCAC Coach of the Year in 2015, when he led Bates to their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Lasagna, only the third head lacrosse coach in program history, is a three-time NESCAC Coach of the Year.
After graduating from Brown University in 1982, Lasagna spent 18 years coaching at his alma mater, including eight as a head coach. While in charge, Lasagna went 65-51 overall and 30-18 in Ivy League play. The Bears went to three NCAA Division 1 championship tournaments during his tenure, and made appearances in the national semifinals in 1994 and quarterfinals in 1995, when Lasagna was named Division 1 Coach of the Year by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).
The NEILA awarded Lasagna Division 1 New England Coach of the Year recognition in both 1994 and 1995.
Off of the field, Lasagna has given voice to the lacrosse community in several other instances, including writing the back-page column for Inside Lacrosse magazine since 2001, and serving as master of ceremonies at two USILA coach’s conventions. He was inducted into the New England Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2002 and into the Greater Rochester (NY) Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2011.
“Pete Lasagna has always been one of the great personalities on the New England lacrosse circuit and a true ambassador of the game. He has a long history of service and accomplishments in many capacities, and after the tremendous success his team had this season, it is very appropriate and an honor to present him this award,” said Rick Senatore, Vice President of NEILA and head men’s lacrosse coach at Franklin Pierce University.
The NEILA Man of the Year Award is an annual honor selected by the administration of NEILA and presented to an individual for incredible contributions to New England Lacrosse.
