NEWTON, Mass. — National semifinalists Wesleyan University received all seven first place votes and have been named Division 3 New England champions for 2017 in the 13th and final New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) polls of the year.
The Cardinals topped Bates College 14-13 in the regional final before falling to RIT in yesterday’s national semifinals. Bates was the unanimous number two team in the region, followed by Amherst, Middlebury, Tufts and Bowdoin, as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) swept the top six spots in Division 3.
Wesleyan joins Yale University in Division 1 and Merrimack College in Division 2, who had already clinched their titles this year as the last teams left standing in their respective divisions. The Warriors are currently the only team from New England still alive, as Merrimack will meet Limestone for the Division 2 national championship on Sunday, May 28th at 2:00 pm at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.
The NEILA polls are voted on by a committee of coaches within each of their respective divisions. The final poll Division 3 poll of 2017 is attached to this email and may be released immediately.
