New Haven, Conn. – Yale held Brown to just one second half goal and rallied from an 8-5 halftime deficit to earn a 10-9 win over the Bears in the Ivy League Tournament Championship game at Reese Field, gaining the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Brown finishes its season with a 10-6 overall record, while Yale improves to 10-5.
In the final frantic seconds with Brown trailing by a goal, Bears’ senior All-American Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY) hit the pipe twice just before time expired.
Molloy, who scored two goals, solidified his record as one of the top players in Brown history as well as the annals of NCAA lacrosse. His 318 career points are a Brown record, passing Darren Lowe’s 316 career points from 1989-92, and rank sixth best in the NCAA record book. Molloy is also the third leading goal scorer in NCAA history with 197 career goals.
Molloy broke the Brown scoring record with his first goal of the game with 34 seconds left in the first quarter. He retrieved the ball out of the net to send to the sideline.
Sophomore Jackson Newsome (Arlington, VA) and freshman Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) scored two goals each for the Bears.
Brown All-American LSM Larken Kemp wrapped up his career with four ground balls, two caused turnovers and an assist. His 56 career long pole points are second in NCAA history, while his 119 career caused turnovers rank seventh in the NCAA record book.
Freshman goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA), the nation’s leader in saves, was superb, making 10 saves, including six in the fourth quarter.
Molloy, Kemp, Goss and junior Stephen Hudak (Rydel, PA) were named to the Ivy League All-Tournament team.
Ben Reeves led the Bulldogs with three goals and an assist and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Ivy Tournament. Matt Gaudet scored two goals, including the game winner, while Jason Alessi and Eric Scott also netted two goals for the Bulldogs.
Brown scored the game’s opening goal when McCaleb found the back of the net, but Yale answered with four straight goals to grab a 4-1 lead with 5:17 left in the opening quarter.
The Bears gained momentum and got back in the game, started by a goal by Newsome, but quickly answered by Yale’s Reeves to give the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead.
Brown scored three straight goals to tie the game, 5-5, on consecutive tallies by Molloy, Newsome and junior Matt Graham (Amityville, NY), and grabbed a 6-5 lead on a goal by Molloy with 8:19 left in the second quarter.
Junior Michael Panepinto (Needham, MA) scored Brown’s fifth straight goal for a 7-5 Bears’ lead with 3:52 left, and McCaleb made it six straight Brown goals, finding the back of the net at the 2:56 mark of the second quarter for an 8-5 Bears’ lead at the half.
Reeves broke a 24-minute Yale scoring drought, finding the back of the net at 7:23 of the third quarter to trail, 8-6. Goals by Yale’s Gaudet and Jack Tigh tied the game, 8-8, with 1:55 left in the third quarter.
Brown’s 18-minute scoring drought came to an end on a goal by Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT) to give Brown a 9-8 lead with 14:04 left in the game.
Yale tied the game on a fast break goal by Alessi at the 7:04 mark of the fourth quarter, and Gaudet gave Yale the lead for good with 3:39 remaining in the game when he picked up a loose ball in front of the Bears’ net and scored for a 10-9 Yale lead.
