NEWTON, Mass. — Mount Ida College fought back from a four goal deficit to tie Lasell College at nine, but the visiting lasers scored the decisive goal with one minute and five seconds remaining and dealt an 11-10 defeat to the Mustangs in an exciting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men’s lacrosse contest at a rainy Alumni Field on Thursday afternoon.
Marcus Donahue (Braintree, Mass.) and Matt Hoffman (Brewster, N.Y.) each scored game-tying goals in the fourth quarter, but each time Lasell answered through sophomore Michael Susi (Gorham, Maine) who scored three times in the game, including the game-winner with 1:05 to play.
Donahue, Hoffman and Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.) each scored multiple goals for the Mustangs (6-4, 1-1 GNAC), but Donahue’s final attempt with under a minute left was saved by senior Jorge Salazar ( Waltham, Mass.), who was stellar in net with 18 saves.
His opposite, Mustang junior Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) made 15 stops.
Austin Tomasetti (Elmsford, N.Y.), Josh Gallant (Hampstead, N.H.), and Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass.) each contributed two goals apiece in the victory.
Mount Ida answered back in the second, as Donahue, Da’zhon Johnston (Southhampton, Bermuda) and Peter Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass.) brought the Mustangs to within one, with the Lasers leading 5-4 going into halftime.
Lasell came out of the break rattling off three straight goals as Austin Shindoll (Denver, Colo.) gave the Lasers an 8-4 lead with 10:49 remaining in the third, but Mount Ida refused to back down. Chad Coelho (Salem, Mass.) answered back with two third quarter goals, to cut the Lasers’ lead 9-8 heading into the final stanza.
Mount Ida won the face-off battle going 14-23 from the X led by Alex Zito (Andover, Conn.), while Chase Swift (Branford, Conn.) went 8-19 for the Lasers.
Lasell beat out Mount Ida 38-35 on ground balls led by Connor Johnson (Hampstead, N.H.) and Travis Duhamel (Deerfield, N.H) who scooped six and five respectfully. The Mustangs outshot the Lasers 45-39.
The Mustangs look to bounce back with a non-conference game against Dean College this Saturday, slated for 1:00 pm at Alumni Field.
Lasell (5-2) hosts Albertus Magnus this Saturday at 2:30 pm, looking to improve to 3-0 in the conference.
