Salem, Mass . – Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.) and Chad Coelho (Salem, Mass.) each notched a hat-trick as Mount Ida defeated Salem State 15-7 at Alumni Field on Thursday afternoon. The Mustangs improve to 5-2 on the season while the Vikings slide to 1-3.
Michael Trifone (Saugus, Mass.) opened the scoring for Salem State before Ton tied the score with 9:27 remaining in the first. Charlie Bourgeois (Billerica, Mass.) put the Vikings back on top, 2-1 but the lead was short lived as Dakari Eason (Norwalk, Conn.) evened the game at 2-2.
Mount Ida then exploded for five unanswered goals in the second period to build a 7-2 halftime lead. Coelho started the string with two back-to-back scores. Ton scored his second goal before setting up Tommy Thompson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) with a nice feed uncontested in front of the Salem State net. Da’zhon Johnston (Southampton, Bermuda) closed the scoring with just two seconds remaining before intermission to give the Mustangs a five-goal lead.
Cody Burdick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) continued the run for the Mustangs, scoring at the 10:43 mark of the third and Pete Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass.) added the seventh straight goal for Mount Ida to extend the lead to 9-2. Max Trifone (Saugus, Mass.) broke the string for the Vikings with less than two minutes left in the third to cut the deficit to 9-3. Marcus Donahue (Braintree, Mass.) closed the scoring in the third, giving the Mustangs a 10-3 lead.
Ton added the hat-trick early in the fourth, extending the lead to 11-3. Zach Persson (Danvers, Mass.) got one back for the Vikings before Coelho and Eason added back to back scores. Donahue made the score 14-4 before Tyler L’Italien (Haverhill, Mass.) and Daniel McLaughlin (Brighton, Mass.) each added a score for Salem State. Hardy scored his second of the game before Salem State’s Hunter Spencer (Beverly, Mass.) made the final 15-7.
Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) picked up his fifth win, making eight saves. Back-up goalies Allen Stein (Levittiwn, N.Y.) and Joseph Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.) also saw action. Kevin Lally (Beverly, Mass.) made 22 saves in the loss.
The Mustangs outshot the Vikings 54-28 and edged Salem State in face offs 13-12
Salem State will host Mass Maritime on Saturday in a rescheduled game from Tuesday, March 21 at 4:00 PM. Mount Ida goes to Eastern Connecticut for a 1:00 PM start on Saturday.
