WESTON, Mass. — Trailing 8-4 entering the final period, Mount Ida College ran off three straight goals, but ran out of time to find an equalizer and dropped their second straight game, 8-7 at Regis College in non-conference men’s lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Regis Stadium.
A goal from senior attackman Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.) to cut the lead to 8-7 with 3:36 remaining would prove to be the game’s final tally, as Coehlo ended the day with a goal and three assists.
Mount Ida had a glorious chance to tie on the man-up as the Pride got caught with too many men on the field with 1:02 remaining, but the Mustangs couldn’t muster any shots, and the game ended 8-7.
Junior attackman Danny Rancano (Miami, Fla.) had two goals and three assists for the Pride, who earned their first win of the year (1-4), while the Mustangs fall to 4-2 with their second straight loss.
Rancano netted the game’s first goal just over four minutes into the first quarter, but the Mustangs’ Wyatt Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) answered at the eight minute mark to even the score.
The score remained 1-1 entering the second quarter, but a pair of goals in the first 3:07 of the second quarter from Peter Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Marcus Donahue (Braintree, Mass.) gave the visitors a two-goal edge. The Pride would come storming back however, as Rancano’s second of the game and a pair from junior Calvin Brault (Colchester, Vt.) before the half gave the Pride a 4-3 lead going to the break.
The Regis offense kept the pressure on after halftime as well, as the Pride scored the third quarter’s first four goals to cap a 7-0 run and take an 8-3 lead with 1:37 remaining until the fourth. Nick Romig (Dedham, Mass.), Brandon Mehler (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Alex Ferran (Miami, Fla.) and AJ Karofsky (Barrington, R.I.) scored the goals for the Pride in the quarter. Sullivan put an end to the Pride streak when he netted his second of the game with nine seconds left in the quarter, cutting the deficit to 8-4 entering the fourth.
Sullivan scored at the end of the third and Donahue and Hardy each tallied in the fourth, with Coehlo following Hardy’s marker twenty seconds later at 3:36.
Senior goalkeeper D.J. Barrile (Medford, Mass.) earned the win for the Pride in goal, making 16 saves on 23 Mustang shots on goal. The loss went to Mount Ida’s Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) who turned away eight shots in the losing effort.
Next up for the Pride, they’ll play host to Norwich University on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
It will be a quick turn-around for the Mustangs, who return to action Thursday afternoon on the road at Salem State University. Face-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
