The New England Black Wolves invited six players from an open tryout to join their training camp in Trumbull, Conn., November 19 and 20.
Former NLL players Alex Turner and Peter Jacobs, both lefthanded forwards, headline the list of six, who were chosen from among 40 players picked to attend the tryout, which was run at the South Shore Sports Center in Hingham, Mass. by the Boston Box Lacrosse League.
The BBLL, working in conjunction with the Black Wolves, received applications from more than 55 players, from which 40 were selected to participate in the two-hour tryout, which consisted of drills and training led by Black Wolves coaches and National Lacrosse League Hall-of-Famers Tracey Kelusky and Jim Veltman, followed by 70 minutes of high-paced scrimmage time. Black Wolves coach Glenn Clark also spoke with the players before and after they were put through their paces.
“The Boston Box League outdid themselves with this tryout,” said Rich Lisk, Black Wolves general manager. “The level of talent was very impressive and it showed, as we invited six players to our main camp. We are looking forward to expanding our relationship with the BBLL.”
Turner has six years of NLL experience with five different franchises, and has registered 104 points in 55 career games for Colorado, Edmonton, Philadelphia, Minnesota and San Jose. He played most recently for Colorado in the 2015 season.
Jacobs played two seasons with the defunct Portland Lumberjax, posting 52 points in 27 career games.
Also selected to advance to training camp were Greg Miceli, a righty transition player who graduated from Stony Brook, Joe Nardella of Rutgers, a faceoff/defensive player who is on the Team USA training roster in field lacrosse, forward Bryce Serriello of Springfield College and forward Grant Whiteway of UMass. Both Serriello and Whiteway have experience playing with the Vermont Voyageurs Senior B team.
Nardella, Serriello and Whiteway all play in the Boston Box Lacrosse League. Four of the five teams playing in the BBLL’s premiere fall-winter season are represented at the Black Wolves camp. In addition to the tryout selections, Marty Bowes and Josh Hawkins – under contract with the Black Wolves – also play in the BBLL.
The New England Black Wolves are the only professional box lacrosse team in New England. The 2017 season will be the team’s third at Mohegan Sun Arena. For more information go to BlackWolves.com or call 844-LAX-WOLF.
