PrimeTime Upsets MegaWhales Despite Late Rally

Blazers capture first win in nightcap versus Minutemen

PrimeTime stretched its lead to 9-3 seconds into the second half, but spent the rest of the game fending off a furious rally by the MegaWhales, escaping Week 2 of Boston Box Lacrosse League action with a 10-9 upset.

In the nightcap, the Minutemen made their BBLL debut and ran with the defending-champion Blazers throughout, only to see a balanced Blazers attack answer every rush to come away with a 13-10 win.

In the opener, the two teams traded early goals until a double-minor penalty against the MegaWhales set up PrimeTime’s man-up offense. Sean Lawton scored a hat trick – two on assists by Brett Serriello and the third on a helper from Brendan Grant – and fed Grant for a score as PrimeTime broke the game open, holding the MegaWhales scoreless over the last 13 minutes of the half.

After Marco Barbone netted a breakaway off the opening faceoff of the second half to make the score 9-3, the MegaWhales slowly worked their way back into the game. Mike Maggio and Bryan Bendig each scored twice, and the MegaWhales defense blanked PrimeTime for 18 over 18 minutes until Grant scored the eventual game-winner on a feed from Spencer Low. While Dan Hettler made it a one-goal game finishing a slick pass from Bendig, Karl Hoffman and the PrimeTime defense were able to kill off the remaining 2:55 on the clock to go home with the win.

Serriello finished with “Legit Player of the Week” honors, grabbing six loose balls, scoring twice and adding two helpers and causing two turnovers in the win. Lawton finished with four points and Grant had three respectively. Karl Hoffman made 28 saves in the win.

Bendig and Maggio both scored three goals for the MegaWhales, who got 23 saves from Chris Hettler.

In the nightcap, the Blazers got three goals each from Greg Rogowski, Marty Bowes and Kyle Baker, with Garrett Naimie adding two scores and Joe Evans providing26 saves in a closer-than-expected match-up with the league’s brand-new team, the Minutemen.

Bowes added five assists on the night, with Rogowski registering two helpers.

For the Minutemen, both Cam Joyce and Bryce Serriello scored four times – with Serriello’s consecutive man-up goals knotting the score at 4 after 10 minutes – and Rob Murray and Matt McIver both put in multi-point nights.

The Boston box Lacrosse League returns to action on Oct. 25 with a rematch of the 2015-16 title game between the Blazers and Bullseye at 9 p.m., followed by the Minutemen challenging the MegaWhales.
