MegaWhales, Bullseye Score Opening-Night Wins

Winners hold off late rallies to register close wins

Mike Maggio’s three second-half goals broke open a close game as the MegaWhales used a balanced attack to take down the defending-champion Blazers 11-8 on Oct. 11, the opening night of the Boston Box Lacrosse League’s fall-winter season.

The opener saw the MegaWhales open a 6-3 halftime lead, with Mark Goodrich and Bryan Bendig accounting for two goals each. Once the Blazers closed the gap to 6-5, it was Maggio’s time to step up, scoring three of the next four goals – with Bendig completing his hat trick in between – as the MegaWhales built a comfortable lead and kept the Blazers off the board for nearly 14 minutes. A late rally from the Blazers, with Kyle Baker and Marty Bowes both completing hat tricks, was too late.

Maggio finished the night with four goals and an assist; Chris Hettler made 27 saves to backstop the win.

In the nightcap, Bullseye got goals from seven different players, including a hat trick from Vin Curran, and then held off a furious second-half rally to defeat PrimeTime 12-9.

Bullseye’s balance showed as the team built a 7-1 halftime lead behind five scorers, with Curran and Will Walker both scoring twice in the run. But after a John Uppgren goal made the score 10-3 Bullseye midway into the second half, PrimeTime mounted a furious comeback, scoring five consecutive goals, including Sean Lawton’s second man-up snipe of the game and two scores from Brett Serriello.

Curran’s third goal of the night gave Bullseye some breathing room and a late empty-netter from Joe Nardella answered another Serriello goal, giving Bullseye the final margin of 12-9.

Nardella, Uppren and Walker joined Curran with three points on the night, with Greg Lally and Chris Curtis adding multi-point nights of their own. Chuck Jaffe made 32 saves in the win. Serriello’s four goals paced PrimeTime, which also got four assists from Brendan Grant, Lawton’s two outside bombs and two scores from Spencer Low.

Next week, on Oct. 18, the MegaWhales meet PrimeTime, while the Blazers face the new Minutemen team in its debut.
