Team Steak Sends a Message; Blazers Get First Win

Defending champs win battle of unbeatens

Team Steak put a stranglehold on the Voyageurs and on first place in the Boston Box Lacrosse league summer session with a dominant 14-3 win over the previously unbeaten Voyageurs on July 19 at South Shore Sports Center in Hingham.

The battle for first place was close for about two-thirds of the first half, but when Pat Fraser (Johns Hopkins) scored two of his three goals, it broke a 2-2 tie and keyed dominance that lasted for the rest of the game. Ten different players netted goals for Steak, the BBLL Summer defending champs, with Nick DeSisto (UMass) and PJ Kelleher (Connecticut College) joining Fraser with having multiple goals on the night. Joe Evans was dominant in the net for Team Steak, putting up 15 saves and frustrating the Voyageurs out of their offense. Dustin Vitagliano (Merrimack) led the Voyageurs with a pair of scores.

After the unbeatens skirmished for first place, it was the battle of the defeated with the winless Blazers and Shamrocks both anxious to get off the skids. In a back-and-forth contest, the Blazers used a 4-goal run to take a 5-3 lead into the half, only to see the Shamrocks score the first three goals of the second half to re-take the lead.

But Greg Rogowski (Merrimack) tied the game for the Blazers, and fed Peter Davies (Michigan commitment) off the ensuing face-off, and then started a tic-tac-toe play that AJ Karofsky (Regis) cashed in with the eventual game-winner, the three scores in 90 seconds taking the starch out of the Shamrocks.

Rogowski finished with three goals and two assists and Karofsky potted a hat trick on the night.

The nightcap was a battle for third place between Team Compete and the Committed 44s, and Compete came away with an 11-7 win. Marty Bowes (Hartford) and Sean Sperzel (Penn State) each scored hat tricks to lead the way. Mike Rasmussen netted four and Nigel Reiff (Bentley) two for the 44s.

The action leaves Team Steak assured of finishing in first place heading, no matter what happens in the final week of the regular season, with the top four teams having locked up playoff spots. Still, playoff seedings are up for grabs on July 26 as Team Compete tangles with the Blazers at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Voyageurs against the Shamrocks and Team Steak versus the Committed 44s. Final playoff pairings will be announced when those games are complete; the BBLL Summer playoffs start on August 2.
