Team Compete gets its first BBLL Summer win

Voyageurs & Team Steak clinch playoffs; set to meet next week

Team Compete used a balanced scoring attack in which 10 players registered goals to take down the Shamrocks, capture its first win of the Boston Box Lacrosse League Summer season, and give itself a leg up on a playoff berth.

Meanwhile, in other action from Tuesday, July 14 at South Shore Sports Center in Hingham, Team Steak and the Voyageurs both remained unbeaten, setting up a first-place showdown on July 19. Steak topped the winless Blazers 13-7 – despite 33 saves from goalie Joe Evans, making his first appearance of the summer – while the Voyageurs controlled the previously unbeaten Committed 44s by a 15-10 final.

Ben O’Neill netted a hat trick and Marty Bowes (Hartford) added a pair of goals to lead Team Compete in a battle of two teams that had been close without winning to this point in the summer. Compete is now in line to make the playoff round, provided it can top the Blazers. Tommy Connelly (Boston University) made 18 saves for Compete; Drew Adams (Vassar), Trevor O’Brien (Hartford) and Chris Reilly (Endicott) each scored twice for the Shamrocks.

In a battle of two previously unbeaten teams, the Voyageurs jumped out to a 5-1 lead, stretched the lead to 9-3 at halftime and cruised to a 15-10 win over the Committed 44s.

Beau Wood (Tufts) led the way with five goals and an assist, jumping back into the BBLL scoring race after leading the summer league in points a year ago. Patrick Hannigan (RIT), Brendan Grant (Bentley), and Jon Nassif (Keene State) each contributed a pair of goals. Nick Shaw (Providence) led the Committed 44 with six goals and a helper, and corralled 13 loose balls.

In the night’s opening contest, Team Steak dominated the first half, running out to a 7-1 lead over the Blazers before playing an even second half to finish with the win. The defending champs got five goals and an assist from Pat Fraser (Johns Hopkins), who took over first place in the league’s points race. Nico Panepinto (Fairfield) and P.J. Kelleher (Connecticut College) both chipped in two goals and an assist. The Blazers were led by goalie Evans (Salisbury), and got a hat trick from Greg Rogowski (Merrimack).

The Summer BBLL resumes on July 19, starting with the first-place match-up between the Voyageurs and Team Steak. The Blazers and Shamrocks meet at 8:30, guaranteeing one team its first win, and the night closes with Team Compete playing the Committed 44 in a game that could be crucial to playoff seeding.
