St. Anselm’s Vitello, Sweeney garner All-NE-10 men’s lacrosse honors
MANSFIELD, Mass. – Saint Anselm College junior midfielder Mark Vitello (Weymouth, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Patrick Sweeney (North Andover, Mass.) were both honored on the Northeast-10 Conference All-Conference Teams.
Mark Vitello was named to the All-NE-10 Second Team, while Sweeney earned All-Rookie Team honors. Vitello becomes the first Second Team selection since Sam McDonald and Matthew Steele earned the honors in 2014. Sweeney becomes the first All-Rookie Team selection since junior Brennan Quackenbush (Marshfield, Mass.) was garnered with the honor in 2014 as well.
The Hawks (8-6, 6-5 NE-10) posted their first winning season since 2012 and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference postseason for the first time since the 2014 campaign. Saint Anselm fell to #8 Adelphi University in the NE-10 First Round on Tuesday night, 13-7.
Vitello finished fourth on the team with 28 points while ranking second on the team in goals (23) and sixth on the squad in assists (5). The junior also added 13 groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers on the year. He recorded a point in 12-of-14 games played, registering multi-point games in seven of those 12 contests.
The junior saved his best for last as he helped propel the Hawks to a postseason berth by tallying 14 points over the final four games of the regular season, including five points in a 14-8 win over Bentley that clinched the final spot in the NE-10 Tournament. He scored the game-winning goal in a 10-7 win at Assumption on April 16.
Patrick Sweeney finished fifth on the Hawks in goals this season (14), while also adding six assists for 20 points. He also picked up eight groundballs and caused eight turnovers to help out the defense.
Sweeney registered a point in 11-of-14 games this season, including five multi-point games. The freshman registered three points in three-straight games to begin his career on the Hilltop and later added another three point game against Pace on April 2.
Bentley’s Adler, A. Astarita Earn Northeast-10 All-Conference Honors
WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley junior Max Adler (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) and freshman Alex Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) have earned spots on the 2016 Northeast-10 Men’s Lacrosse All-Conference teams.
Adler, a face-off specialist, was voted to the first team by the conference’s 12 head coaches. Astarita, a midfielder, was voted to the All-Rookie team.
Adler has been one of the most dominant face-off takers in Division II the past two seasons. As of May 4, he’s 4th in the nation in face-off winning percentage at 72.8%. He won 195 out of the 268 draws he took this season. He finished last season 6th in Division II in face-off winning percentage.
The junior is also 4th nationally in ground balls per game at 9.15 He had a season-high 19, while going 22-26 in face-offs, in a game at Southern New Hampshire on March 30. Adler also had a dominant game vs. Pace where he collected 18 ground balls and went 23-25 in the face-off circle. He had three other games where he picked up double-digit ground balls, including 11 vs. Merrimack on April 23.
Astarita made an immediate impact as a freshman. He finished 3rd on the team in both goals (19) and points (23), and notched four assists. He had a goal in all but one of Bentley’s 13 games this season.
The youngest of three Astarita brothers to have played for the Bentley men’s lacrosse team, he had a hat trick in two games this season; vs. Franklin Pierce March 19 and at Southern New Hampshire. Astarita also scored the overtime goal in Bentley’s 10-9 win over Assumption on March 26.
