Hamden, Conn. – Junior All-American attackman Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY) scored five goals to lead the 10th ranked Brown men’s lacrosse team to a 20-7 season-opening win over Quinnipiac to kick-off its 66th season of intercollegiate lacrosse.
Molloy, the nation’s leading scorer and Ivy League Player of the Year in 2015, picked up where he left off a year ago with five goals on nine shots.
Senior attackman Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD) also had a big opening afternoon for the Bears with three goals and an assist, while senior attackman Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) chipped in with two goals and one assist.
Brown’s defense doesn’t get the attention its offense receives, but senior All-American goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) was on his game from the outset, making eight saves in 38 minutes of play. Sophomore defenseman Alec Tulett (Toronto, Ontario) also had a big game with four caused turnovers.
Senior Will Gural (Haverford, PA) won the battle of the face-off x, capturing 11-of-14 face-offs.
Conor Meth paced the Quinnipiac attack with two goals. Jack Brust made seven saves in goal for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac opened the scoring with a goal in the first two minutes to grab a 1-0 lead, but the high-scoring Brown attack quickly responded with goals by Blynn, Molloy, junior Brewster Warble (Bronxville, NY), senior Matt Graham (Amityville, NY), and Bellistri to grab a 5-1 advantage after one quarter.
The Bears’ assault on the Bobcats continued with Bellistri scoring at 12:05 of the second quarter to lift Brown to a 6-1 lead.
Quinnipiac got back on the scoreboard on a goal by Anthony Carchietta midway through the quarter, but the Bears quickly extended their lead to 11-2 at the half on goals by Bellistri, Gural, two by Molloy and another by Blynn.
The third quarter was all Brown once again with Molloy scoring twice, and additional goals from junior All-American Larken Kemp (Greenwich, CT), sophomore Jack Collins (Barrington, RI), and senior Brendan Caputo (Westbury, NY) to open up a 16-4 lead heading into the final quarter.
Senior John Yozzo-Scaperotta (Dobbs Ferry, NY), freshman Jackson Newsome (Arlington, VA), sophomore Owen Rogers (Babylon, NY), and sophomore Jake Miller (Hartland, WI) added fourth-quarter goals for the Bears.
