Blazers and MegaWhales Earn Easy Wins

The MegaWhales scored nine unanswered goals beginning mid-way through the second half to blow open a close game and take down Team Legit 18-7, while the Blazers scored nine of the game’s 10 goals in a mid-game stretch and coasted to a 14-8 win over PrimeTime as the Boston Box Lacrosse League resumed its season Jan. 5.

The MegaMen got hat tricks from Bryan Bendig, Grant Whiteway and Dan Hettler, plus a 7-point night from Mike Maggio to overwhelm Legit late in the game. Legit – which continued a season-long trend of solid starts, leading after 10 minutes of play – closed to within 2 when Sean Lawton netted a Bryce Serriello feed seconds into a man-up opportunity to make the score 9-7. From there, however, goalie Chris Hettler shut the door – finishing with 29 saves – and the MegaWhales’ superior ball movement won out.

Dan Hettler earned Legit Player of the Week honors, finishing with six points, seven loose balls and four caused turnovers. He scored his three goals on just four shots.

Mark Goodrich added four points for the winners, who also got multi-point games from Bryant Armitrano and Steve Trocki. Legit was led by two goals and an assist each from brothers Brett and Bryce Serriello. Jack Murphy and Rob Murray both contributed multi-point nights.

In the nightcap, the Blazers jumped out to a 4-0 lead – with Greg Rogowski scoring twice and assisting on the others – only to see PrimeTime close the gap to 4-3 with 9:30 remaining in the half.

From there, the Blazers scored nine of the game’s next 10 goals. Rogowski finished with four goals – netting his six points on the team’s first seven scores – while Kyle Baker added four tallies and a helper. Marty Bowes added four points, with Garrett Naimie and Brandon Dube contributing three each for the Blazers, who were backstopped by Joe Evans’ 30 saves.

Jason Wellemeyer and Brendan Grant both registered hat tricks for PrimeTime.

Next week’s schedule features a critical battle between the MegaWhales and Bullseye – separated by a half-game in the middle of the BBLL standings – with PrimeTime looking to clinch its place in the BBLL playoff round, which it can do by eliminating Team Legit.
