Team Steak Clinches Regular-Season Crown

Six-goal run breaks 12-12 tie and sinks Regals; Penguins top Gaels

Team Steak broke a 12-12 tie mid-way through the second half with a six-goal run and clinched first place in the Boston Box Lacrosse League summer season with an 18-15 win over the Regals on July 21 at the South Shore Sports Center in Hingham. In the first game of the night, the Penguins, similarly, used a late run to top the Gaels 10-7.

Team Steak had six players register at least three points in the game, led by four goals and two assists from Morgan Cheek. Parker McKee and Tommy Wynn both contributed three goals and two assists and Tommy Shannon’s hat trick included a goal with two seconds remaining in the first half to tie the score at 6 at the break, recovering from a 6-3 deficit midway through the period. Nico Panepinto and Will Walker both added two goals and a helper for the winenrs.

The Regals got four goals each from Beau Woods, Chris Curtis and Brandon Dube, and got multi-point nights from Brandon Keith and Garrett Naimie.

In the opening game, the winless Gaels led at halftime for the first time all summer and stretched a 4-3 lead at the break to a 6-3 advantage before the Penguins stormed back. Jason Wellemeyer scored five goals in the win, but Tucker Dietrich tied the game at 6 and then picked up an assist and another goal – his only points on the night – to key the turnaround. Brendan Grant and Tony Fitti also registered multi-point nights for the Penguins.

The Gaels were led by three goals each from Trevor O’Brien and Myles Horn, who will be teammates at the University of Hartford next season.

The action effectively sets the standings for the summer, as the games of July 28 cannot change seedings regardless of outcomes. That said, the July 28 games represent a playoff preview, as the teams will meet the following week in the playoff round; on July 28, the Regals play the Penguins at 8:30, followed by Team Steak against the Gaels.
