Team Steak Comes Back to Remain Unbeaten

Two shorthanded goals break late tie with upset-minded Penguins

With a tie score and 2:07 remaining in regulation. Team Steak faced its biggest challenge of the Boston Box Lacrosse League summer season, down two men against a Penguin squad that had enjoyed tremendous success on extra-man offense all night.

But Tommy Shannon scored his only goal of the game on a feed from Will Walker with 1:17 remaining and P.J. Kelleher netted a loose ball off the ensuing face-off as Team Steak stunned the Penguins in a game that finished with a final score of 15-12.

Pat Fraser led the winners with six goals and an assist, while Kelleher, Nico Panepinto and Morgan Cheek racked up two goals each. The Penguins saw 11 of their 12 goals on the night come off of assists and were led by Michael Leonard’s one-goal, five-assist night. Brendan Grant and Spencer Low both notched hat tricks for the Penguins, who also got two goals from Jason Wellemeyer.

In the opening game on July 14 at South Shore Sports Center, the Regals downed the Gaels 16-10, getting dominant offensive performances from three forwards. The right side of the Regal offense accounted for 10 goals and 6 assists, with league-leading scorer Beau Wood accounting for five goals and an assist. Chris Curtis added four goals and a helper, with Garrett Naimie adding three helpers and Randy Fraser registering a goal and an assist. The left side of the Regals offense was led by Brandon Dube, who potted five goals and added two assists in his second game of the summer.

Scott Whear and Tyler Powers led the Gaels with three goals each.

On July 21, the Regals and Team Steak will battle for first place in the nightcap, after the Penguins and Gaels play the opener.
