Team Steak Stakes Claim to League Lead

Pat Fraser breaks open close game to top Regals

Tied at 7 after nearly 40 minutes of play, 3d Team Steak blitzed the Regals down the stretch, scoring seven times in the game’s final eight minutes to claim a 14-7 win and sole possession of first place in the Boston Box Lacrosse Summer League. In the nightcap, the Penguins raced off to a big lead, then staved off a Gaels comeback to earn a 16-11 victory.

The second goal on the night from Pat Fraser tied the game at 7 – after the balanced Team Steak offense had seen six different players register the team’s first six goals – and from there Fraser and Tom Shannon notched five more markers to break the game open.

Fraser finished with six points, Shannon registered a hat trick, and James Leary and Tommy Wynn both scored twice in leading a balanced Steak attack that dished out 10 assists on its 14 scores. Tim Bulens (1-3-4) and Mark Goodrich (1-2-3) also had multi-point games. Brandon Dube and Beau Wood led the Regals with three goals each.

In the nightcap, the Penguins scored the game’s first six goals, held a 10-2 halftime lead and then watched as the Gaels – who had come from behind late in Week 1 to force overtime against the Regals – mount a surprising comeback that brought the score to 14-11 with four minutes left and a man-up opportunity. The Penguins killed off first the penalty and then the clock to get their first win of the summer.

Kerry Lyne and Jason Wellemeyer both hit the net four times, with Cam Joyce (2-2-4), Brendan Grant (1-3-4), Ken Keirstead (1-2-3) and defenseman Greg Dewire (2 goals) having multi-point nights. Alex Bunick also registered two goals for the winners, but his bigger contribution was 11 loose balls, two caused turnovers and a shorthanded goal that, effectively, ended the Gaels’ comeback hopes. Nick Sisoiza and Trevor O’Brien both went 3-1-4 for the Gaels, who also got multi-point games from Shane O’Brien, Charlie Murphy, Mike Rasmussen and Brendan Burke.

Next week, the Gaels meet 3d Team Steak, while the Penguins and Regals battle for second place as the summer’s regular season reaches its halfway point.
