Construction Underway For Garber Field Resurfacing Project

The old turf surface has been removed and work is being completed around the edges of the field.

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Athletic Department is in the process of replacing the playing surface at Garber Field, the home venue for head coach Greg Cannella’s men’s lacrosse program. The facility, which is receiving a new field turf surface, will also host head coach Angela McMahon’s women’s lacrosse program beginning in 2015-16.

The old turf was cut into sections, rolled up and removed from the site during the month of May before construction crews broke apart and hauled off the approximately 6-to-8 foot wide path of asphalt that previous surrounded the playing area. Work will continue of the facility throughout the summer.

The construction project at Garber Field is one of many athletic facility upgrades the University of Massachusetts has invested in recently. The John Francis Kennedy Champions Center for UMass Basketball is currently under construction while the Football Performance Center and Martin & Richard Jacobson Football Press and Skybox Complex were finished less than one year ago. Ground was broken on a new facility for the field hockey program in May 2015 as well while the rowing program received a state-of-the-art boathouse on the Connecticut River in 2013.
