NEWTON, Mass. – After their first four games of the regular season were postponed due to snow, the Mount Ida College men’s lacrosse team finally saw their season begin today against the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth. UMD was able to edge the Mustangs by a final score of 9-8 on Bo Prozinski’s (Ashland, Mass.) tally with just 6:49 remaining in the 4th quarter.
With the win, UMass improves to 2-2 (0-0 LEC) while Mount Ida starts the season at 0-1 (0-0 GNAC).
Mount Ida junior attack Chris Kidger (Townsend, Mass.) opened the scoring for both teams just fifty-four seconds into the game giving the hosts the early 1-0 advantage. The early marker by Mount Ida sparked the Corsairs as they scored four straight goals on two tallies by Connor Gaffney (Andover, Mass.) and single goals from DJ Miller (Ashland, Mass.) and Prozinski while taking a three goal lead at 4-1.
Midfielder Andrew Johnson (Hopkinton, Mass.) gave the visitors a 5-1 lead at the 7:31 mark of the second quarter before transfer Lucas Stralka (East Greenwich, R.I.) got the Mustangs back within three at 5-2 with just over five minutes remaining in the half. In the waning seconds of the first half, Gaffney struck again for his third goal of the game, good for a hat trick, giving UMD a cushion at the break by a score of 6-2.
The Mustangs came out of the gates in the second half on fire as they notched the first four goals of the half to knot things up at 6-6.
Peter Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass.) started the scoring off an assist from Mike Markevich (Westminster, Mass.) just under three minutes into the second half. Stralka would strike next brining the hosts back to within two goals on an unassisted tally before Markevich inched Mount Ida closer with an unassisted goal himself. Stralka notched his third and final goal of the game with under three minutes remaining in the third quarter to bring Mount Ida all the way back, tying the game at, 6-6.
UMD’s Sean Peters (Medway, Mass.) put the Corsairs back in front immediately once the fourth quarter began off a feed from teammate Eddie Sheridan (Chelmsford, Mass.). With the score 7-6, in favor of UMass Dartmouth, Mustang Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.) once again brought the Mustangs from behind tying the game at 7 – apiece. A little over a minute later, the Mustangs took their first lead since 1-0 in the opening minutes of the game off Wyatt Sullivan’s (Arlington, Mass.) laser that gave Mount Ida the 8-7 lead with 9:36 remaining in the game.
However, UMD had other ideas as they were able to tie the game at 8-8 off another tally from Miller before Prozinski struck again with the eventual game winner, giving UMass the 9-8 victory.
