Harvard Men’s Lacrosse Powers Past Quinnipiac, 17-12

Lang registered his first-career hat trick with three goals and two assists.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Devin Dwyer totaled six points while freshman Joe Lang added five as the No. 13/16 Harvard men’s lacrosse team returned to the win column Tuesday afternoon with a 17-12 victory over Quinnipiac at Soldiers Field Lacrosse Stadium.

Dwyer scored one goal and dished out five assists, extending his point-scoring streak to 22 games dating back to 2013. His five helpers moved his career total to 71, tying him with Peter Predun ’80 for ninth place in program history. Lang’s five points came on three goals and two assists, giving the freshman his first career hat trick.

Ian Ardrey and Deke Burns also finished with a hat trick, scoring four goals and three goals, respectively. Sean McDonagh and Will Walker each tacked on two goals apiece, with Matt Ryan and Austin Williams adding one.

Bryan Moore picked up his second win of the season, making eight saves against four goals allowed in just 25:42 of action. Jake Gambitsky started the game and gave way to Moore after allowing six goals through the first 30 minutes, while freshman Robert Shaw made his collegiate debut to close the game out.

Williams was solid at the X, winning 13-of-22 face offs and collecting a game-high eight ground balls. Dwyer, Burns and Morgan Cheek were also credited with three ground balls on the day, with Walker Kirby registering three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Harvard finished the evening with a 39-31 advantage on the ground, and was successful on 9-of-10 clears.

Ardrey scored Harvard’s first two goals of the game and Harvard took an early 4-1 lead as Walker and McDonagh found the back of the net within 37 seconds of one another. Quinnipiac (1-2) responded in a big way, however, going on a 5-0 run to take the lead before Ryan’s transition goal cut the Crimson’s deficit to 6-5 at the break.

The Bobcats netted the first goal of the second half for a 7-5 advantage, but strikes by Lang and Burns evened the score with 8:43 left to play in the third. With Quinnipiac back in front, 9-8, Harvard exploded with a 6-0 run and finished the game outscoring the Bobcats 9-3 to take the victory.

Lang began the outburst to bring the score even once again at 9-9. The Crimson then added five goals in a span of 2:29 to begin the fourth quarter, with Ardrey going back-to-back to finish the run off. After a Quinnipiac goal made it a 14-10 game, Lang, McDonagh and Dwyer each found the back of the net to put the game away.

Harvard will return to the friendly confines of Soldiers Field Lacrosse Stadium Saturday, March 7 as it hosts Penn State.
