WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men’s lacrosse begins its 2015 campaign on Saturday afternoon as #12 Dowling visits LaMoy Field for a 1 p.m. start. The Eagles look to build on last season’s 4-11 record. Post was 2-3 at home last year.
2014 SEASON RECAP
The Eagles finished their inaugural season at a record of 4-11. Post opened up 2-0 with wins over Ohio Valley (13-7) and American International (11-9). The Eagles picked up an early double-overtime win over Young Harris to begin 3-1.
Post played four teams that were ranked in the top-15 during the middle of the season as they fell to 3-10. The Eagles got back in track with an offensive explosion against Alderson-Broaddus, taking home a 24-10 win. Kyle Shannon and Brian Beatson each had six goals in the victory.
Jack Kearney was named Second Team All-NEILA for his performance at long-stick midfielder. He finished with a team-high 20 caused turnovers and 47 groundballs. Anthony DeRosa was eighth in Division II at 13.08 saves per game in the cage.
Post got out to an early lead after winning the opening faceoff. Freshman Troy Walters (Corning, N.Y.) picked up the ground ball off the faceoff and classmate Kyle Shannon (Stanhope, N.J.) beat the keeper to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 14:04 mark of the first. Dowling scored five goals throughout the rest of the quarter to hold a 5-1 lead after one.
After a Post goal early in the second quarter. The Golden Lions quickly answered back with six goals and led 11-2 with 4:58 remaining in the half. Alex Brownlee and freshman Tim Wright (Waterloo, N.Y.) each scored before the end of the period to cut the deficit to 11-4 at the break.
Freshman Jack Kearney (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and junior Brian Beatson (Fairfax, Va.) added goals late in the fourth quarter for the Eagles. Post grabbed 26 ground balls on the afternoon led by junior goalkeeper Anthony DeRosa (Toms River, N.Y.) with five. DeRosa also stopped a season-high 19 shots.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN LIONS
Dowling is coming off a 12-5 season in which it was ranked as high as #4 in the USILA Poll. The Golden Lions fell to Adelphi in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. This season Dowling was picked to finish fifth in the ECC. Midfielder Brian White is the top returning starter. An ECC First Team selection a year ago he finished with 19 goals, 15 assists, and 20 groundballs.
Head coach Jim Griffin named five upperclassmen as captains for the 2015 season. Brian Beatson, Anthony DeRosa, Jack Kearney, Frank Nichols Jr., and Andrew Supanich will lead the team this year. Beatson, Kearney, and Supanich also served as captains last season.
PLAYING SOME OF THE BEST
The Eagles will be playing some tough competition this season. Post will play three teams ranked in the USILA Preseason Poll and one that received votes. The Eagles host #12 Dowling to open the season. Post will also welcome #3 LIU-Post to LaMoy on March 25. The Eagles visit #14 Molloy on April 8 and host Chestnut Hill to close out the year on April 25. The Griffins received votes in the poll.
On Oct. 12, the Eagles participated in the Northeast Classic Lacrosse Tournament in Braintree, Mass. and played exhibition games against Saint Rose and UMass-Boston. All proceeds from the tournament were donated to cancer research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Mass.

Post hits the road for a four-game stretch beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at Pace. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
