Bowes’ 5 goals earn Marc Mesh Player of the Week honors
The story was different but the result was the same as the Blazers and MegaMen opened the Winter Boston Box Lacrosse League session with a rematch of the Fall championship that saw the Blazers again come away with a one-goal win in a 13-12 thriller.
In Jan. 6 action at South Shore Sports Center in Hingham, the Blazers fell behind 5-0, but if they needed to remember how leads in this series mean nothing, they needed only to remember the fall title game, when they led the MegaMen 7-1 but escaped as 9-8 victors. In the winter opener, the Blazers tied the game at 6 and got a small lead early in the second half and nursed it to the end.
Marty Bowes led the way with 5 goals and an assist to go with 10 loose balls, earning Marc Mesh player of the week honors. Garrett Naimie and Lukas Buckley both added two goals and an assist, Brandon Dube potted two goals and Randy Fraser had a goal and two assists for the winners. On the MegaMen side of the ledger, Bryan Bendig had six points (4 goals, 2 assists), Matt Levesque added five (2 goals, three assists), Brian Krol notched a hat trick and Charlie Niznansky scored twice.
In the nightcap, BullsEye and PrimeTime played a back-and-forth game – tied at halftime with PrimeTime taking its first lead at the start of the second stanza – only to have BullsEye run off the last 10 goals of the game while shutting out PrimeTime over the game’s last 14 minutes to register a 16-10 win.
Mark Goodrich led BullsEye with a two-goal, six-assist night, including several helpers to Beau Woods (4 goals). Greg Lally registered a hat trick and Dan DiMaria scored twice for BullsEye. Mike Stone led PrimeTime with three goals and an assist, with Jason Wellemeyer and Brendan Grant recording two goals each.
In Week 2 of Winter session next week, the Blazers face PrimeTime, while BullsEye squares off with the MegaMen. A limited number of roster spots are available for players looking to join the BBLL’s winter session, which runs through March; interested players should contact email@example.com.
