Dominant Blazers Claim First Place

BullsEye’s Goodrich earns Marc Mesh Player of the Week

The defending-champion Blazers reclaimed the top spot in the standings with a dominant 13-4 win over the MegaMen in Boston Box Lacrosse League action at the South Shore Sports Center in Hingham on November 11. League-leading goaltender BullsEye broke open a close game at halftime and raced to a 16-6 win over PrimeTime in the night’s other game.

For the Blazers, two stories shaped the night, a balanced offense that saw eight players contribute goals and 10 players register points, and a defense that made it hard for the MegaMen to get quality shots and loose balls. When the MegaMen did get their looks, league-leading goaltender Joe Evans frustrated them, finishing with 26 saves on the night. Kurt Hunziker scored three goals and an assist to lead the way, but Randy Fraser, Garrett Naimie and Kevin Murphy contributed two goals each and had eight players register two points on the night. Dan Hettler led the MegaMen with two goals.

In the opener, Mark Goodrich scored four goals and added two assists to earn Marc Mesh Player of the Week honors, and got half of those points in the opening minutes of the second half, as BullsEye broke open a tight game that stood at 6-3 at half and sprinted off to a 16-6 win. Goodrich’s four goals came on six shots on goal; Beau Wood added four goals and Ben Smith two as nine BullsEye players registered goals on the night. Chuck Jaffe stopped 32 shots and the BullsEye defense held league-leading scorer Jason Wellemeyer to a two-point night. Brendan Grant and Ken Keirstead both scored two goals to lead PrimeTime.

The updated standings have the Blazers on top, with the MegaMen and BullsEye tied for second. Both the Blazers and BullsEye control their own destiny; if they win out in the last two weeks of the regular season, they capture first place for the session. The Blazers take on PrimeTime at 9 p.m. on Nov. 18, followed by the MegaMen looking to sweep the season series against BullsEye at 10.
