PrimeTime shakes up the standings

Jason Wellemeyer earns Marc Mesh Player of the Week

PrimeTime shook up the Boston Box Lacrosse League standings with a 14-12 upset over the first-place MegaMen, behind six goals from league-leading scorer Jason Wellemeyer, earning the first worst-over-first upset in league history. The MegaMen finished the evening in a tie for the league lead at 4-2 with the Blazers, who took down BullsEye 9-5 in the opening game at South Shore Sports Center; the two top teams play on November 11.

Wellemeyer finished the night with eight loose balls, nine shots on goal, an assist to go with the six scores and a caused turnover, and increased his league-leading total to 25 points, the only player in the league currently with more than 20 points on the season. Ken Keirstead contributed two goals and two assists and Brendan Grant went 2-1 on the night. Karl Hoffman – making his first appearance this season in the net – stopped 22 shots.

Mike Maggio (4-2) and Dan Hettler (3-3) led the MegaMen with six points each.

In the opening game, Blazers’ goalie Joe Evans and a scorching defense held BullsEye scoreless until the last minute of the first half, opening a 6-1 lead. While BullsEye closed the gap and stayed in the game throughout – outscoring the Blazers in the second half – it could never get all the way back to equal.

Evans finished with 33 saves and Brandon Dube netted three goals and an assist for the winners, with Randy Fraser and Marty Bowes contributing three points each. Ryan Danehy netted two goals for BullsEye which got 10 loose balls and three caused turnovers from Ben Knapton and 27 saves from goalie Chuck Jaffe.

On Nov. 11, PrimeTime faces BullsEye in the opener, with PrimeTime needing to start a winning streak to have any chance of avoiding last place in the playoff round. The nightcap features the Blazers and MegaMen, with the winner owning the season series and having the inside track on ending the session in first place for the regular season.
