Blazers Shake Up MegaMen and Standings

Defender Kyle Barnett earns Marc Mesh Player of the Week

A week after scoring just five goals in a disappointing loss, the defending-champion Blazers built a 5-0 lead in the game’s first seven minutes and raced off to a 17-5 win over the previously unbeaten MegaMen in Boston Box Lacrosse League action on October 21.

Marc Mesh Player of the Week Kyle Barnett led the resurgent Blazers at both ends of the floor; the defender from Keene State keyed the fast break, and registered three goals on the evening on just three shots, while also collecting three loose balls and causing two turnovers. The Blazers got four goals each from Kurt Hunziker and Garrett Naimie, had 2-goal, 3-assist games from both Randy Fraser and Nick Coppola, and saw Brandon Dube return to action with a team-leading 9 loose balls to go along with four points. Joe Evans made 32 stops to push his league-leading save percentage mark back above .800 for the season. Brian Krol led the MegaMen with two goals.

In the night’s opening action, BullsEye saw 12 of its 14 runners register goals – with all but one player tallying points – as it broke a 6-6 tie midway through the first half and raced out to a 19-9 win over PrimeTime. Greg Lally scored five goals and defender Danny Bialosky notched three, and Ben Smith had the team’s top stat line with 10 loose balls to go along with six points (1 goal, 5 assists). For PrimeTime, Jason Wellemeyer scored five goals – two of them on slick one-handed shots – to maintain his status as the league’s top goal-scorer.

The Blazers win sets up a battle for first place in the opening game on October 28, with the MegaMen squaring off against BullsEye; both teams are 3-1, with the MegaMen having won the first meeting between the two in convincing fashion. The Blazers will square off with PrimeTime in the nightcap, with a win moving them into a second-place tie with the loser of the opening game.
