MegaMen, BullsEye Snag First-Week Wins

Mike Maggio earns Marc Mesh Player of the Week honors

The Boston Box Lacrosse League opened its fall season on Sept. 30 with proof that the league could be tighter than ever, as the MegaMen — winners of just two games last winter — upset the defending champion Blazers 10-8, with BullsEye taking down PrimeTime 13-8 in the nightcap.

Brian Krol and Dan Hettler led the MegaMen with three goals each, but it was Marc Mesh Player of the Week Mike Maggio who was the difference-maker, netting two goals and three assists while grabbing five loose balls and causing three turnovers in a strong all-around night.

MegaMen goalie Chris Hettler scooped a game-high 11 loose balls in addition to stopping 30 shots, an even battle with Blazers goalie Joe Evans, who stopped 30 shots in his team’s loss. Garrett Naimie led the Blazers with a hat trick.

In the nightcap, Dan DiMaria scored four goals and added an assist, while former Tuft’s University star Beau Wood went 3 goals-2 assists in his box lacrosse debut to lead BullsEye to the win. Ben Smith added two goals and an assist as seven different BullsEye players registered goals.

Jason Wellemeyer led PrimeTime with four goals.

The Boston Box Lacrosse League will have just one unbeaten team left after Week 2 action on October 7, as the MegaMen and BullsEye meet in the nightcap, while PrimeTime and the Blazers will try to avoid falling into an 0-2 hole in the 9 p.m. game.
