Bentley Women’s Lacrosse Runs Past So. New Hampshire 12-9
WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Jackie Brown (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) had a hat trick and graduate student Taylor Bastien (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) notched five more assists to help the Bentley women’s lacrosse team to a 12-9 win over Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday night.
The win is the second straight and fourth in five games for the Falcons, who improve their Northeast-10 record to 5-4 and overall record to 6-7. The Penmen fall to 2-7 in NE-10 play and 4-10 overall.
After Southern’s Alexa Allen scored the game’s opening goal 2:20 in, Bentley never trailed again after senior Carolyn Kynoch (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) tied it up 51 seconds later. But Southern did keep it close until Bentley pulled away over the final 10 minutes.
The Falcons took a 7-4 lead into halftime and pushed their lead to 8-4 after Brown’s third of the game just 21 seconds into the second half. But a 3-0 run by the Penmen that took over 12 minutes brought them to within 8-7 after freshman Taylor Graf scored at the 12:40 mark.
But Bentley responded with a decisive 4-0 run. Sophomore Tori Cerny (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) got it started, scoring with 10:05 to play. Goals also came from sophomores Kelsey Howard (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and Erin O’Connor (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Bastien during the run. The last goal of the run by Bastien came with 5:45 to play and gave Bentley a 12-7 lead.
Bastien had four of her five assists in the first half, including assists on three of Bentley’s first four goals. She now has 34 on the season.
The Falcons will go for their third straight win on Saturday when they host Franklin Pierce for a 12:00 pm start.
Bentley Men’s Lacrosse Falls on the Road to So. New Hampshire 8-7
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire’s Cameron Joyce scored the deciding goal with 5:03 left in the fourth quarter as the Penmen upended visiting Bentley by an 8-7 score in a Northeast-10 men’s lacrosse game on Wednesday night.
In a back-and-forth game with four lead changes, neither team led by more than two goals. Bentley erased a 7-5 deficit with fourth quarter goals by David Phelps (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) and Mike Carter (Walpole, Mass./Thayer Academy), but Joyce’s goal was the game-winner for the Penmen.
Bentley led 3-2 after the first quarter, but endured a long scoring draught that lasted well into the third quarter and allowed Southern to take a 5-3 lead. The Falcons finally ended the drought with a goal from sophomore attack Matt Brigham (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) with 4:41 left in the third, followed by a man-up goal from junior Matt Dente (Reading, Mass./Reading) at the 3:08 mark to tie the score.
Southern though responded with two straight goals of its own, coming from junior Corey Allen at 2:55 and Joyce at 1:03 to give them a 7-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Phelps notched his second goal of the night at the 12:33 mark of the fourth to pull Bentley to within 7-6, and Carter’s sixth goal of the season with 9:22 to play tied things up. However, Joyce put the Penmen in front 8-7 just before the clock hit 5:00, and Bentley did not have an answer.
The defeat drops Bentley’s records to 6-5 overall and 6-3 in the NE-10, while Southern New Hampshire improves to 5-6 overall and 5-4 NE-10. The Falcons will look to get back in the win column on Saturday night when they host Franklin Pierce on Senior Night. Game time is 7:00 pm.
