WORCESTER, Mass. – With the Crusaders leading by an 11-3 score with 12:01 left in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers scored eight straight goals to send the game to overtime and then Mike Mawdsley netted the game-winner as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team fell to Sacred Heart, 12-11, on Tuesday night at Holy Cross Field in non-conference action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-9 overall, while the Pioneers improve to 4-7 overall.
Freshman Kevin Lux (Manlius, N.Y.) scored a season-best four goals as he posted his second straight hat-trick, while sophomore Sean Wilkinson (Ridgefield, Conn.) tallied one goal and four assists for five points. Freshman Ben Williams (Prior Lake, Minn.) won 16 of 23 faceoffs and picked up 12 ground balls. Cody Marquis led the Pioneers with five goals.
After Lux gave the Crusaders an early 1-0 lead, the Pioneers then netted two straight to take a 2-1 advantage. The Crusaders responded by scoring six consecutive goals to move out to a 7-2 lead with 4:30 left in the second quarter as senior captain Kyle Kadlick (West Roxbury, Mass.), junior Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.), Wilkinson, Williams, junior captain Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) and Lux each netted a goal. With the score now 7-3 following a goal by Alex Dodge, Lux tallied his third goal of the contest as the Crusaders took an 8-3 lead to the half.
The Crusaders scored the only three goals of the third quarter to increase their advantage to 11-3. Lux, senior captain Matt Smith (North Bethesda, Md.) and sophomore Joe Reilly (Garden City, N.Y.) each found the back of the net for the Crusaders. The Pioneers then outscored the Crusaders 8-0 in the fourth quarter including a goal by Marquis with 2:54 left to tie the game at 11-11. With 12 seconds left McKenna fired a shot that went wide of the net and then Haarmann sent a shot wide of the goal with just four seconds left as the game went to overtime. With 2:02 remaining in overtime, Marquis sent a pass from the side of the goal to Mawdsley who fired a shot to the back of the net as the Pioneers scored nine straight goals to earn the victory.
Sophomore goalie Michael Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) made seven saves. Ryan Hughes allowed 11 goals and made eight saves for the Pioneers, while Jon Flood played the fourth quarter and overtime as he kept the Crusaders off the scoreboard and made two saves. HC outshot SHU, 45-35, while the Crusaders secured 35 ground balls and the Pioneers posted 19. Holy Cross won 18 of 26 faceoffs, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on extra-man opportunities and the Pioneers went 1-3.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 12, when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to take on Colgate at Andy Kerr Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
