HENNIKER, N.H. – Mount Ida College held a one-goal lead at halftime of Tuesday afternoon’s men’s lacrosse game against New England College, but were outscored 7-3 in the third quarter by the Pilgrims and fell 13-10 to their non-conference opponents at Don Melander Field.
The Mustangs drop to 2-3 on the year, while New England College collects their first win of the season (1-1).
The win is the first of the season for the Pilgrims who improve to 1-1 overall, while the loss drops the Mustangs to 2-3.
Leading the way for the Mustangs were freshmen Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.), who scored three times, and Ryan Trinque (East Greenwich, R.I.), who netted two goals and dished out an assist.
The Pilgrims struck just seconds into the opening quarter as Nick Herzog (Hampstead, N.H.) scored his first goal of the season off of the opening draw. The Mustangs responded with three straight goals, including two by Coehlo, building a 3-1 lead midway through the opening quarter., but NEC’s Adam Shute (Calgary, Alberta) knotted the game with two straight goals.
Trinque gave the Mustangs the lead by the end of the quarter with his first goal of the game.
The two teams exchanged a pair of goals in the second quarter, including a man-up goal by Mount Ida’s Zach Davis (Old Saybrook, Conn.), and the Mustangs would head into halftime with the 6-5 advantage.
NEC scored three straight third quarter goals to get their noses in front, 9-8, midway through the period, and eventually took a 12-9 advantage into the final quarter. Senior J.T. Hoyt (Westfield, Mass.) was the lone goal-scorer for the Mustangs during a 7-1 New England College spurt.
The hosts tacked on an additional score by Liam Peck (Bedford, Nova Scotia) in the fourth quarter, and Zach Rosen (East Greenwich, R.I.) netted a man-up goal for the Mustangs with under 1:30 left, but that was all the offense the final period would see.
Senior Kyle Cordaro (Worcester, Mass.) made 15 stops in net, while Corey Gelbstein (Greenwich, Conn.) grabbed a team-high four ground balls for Mount Ida.
Shute finished with four goals and two assists and Skylar Saunders (Cambridge, Mass.) netted three goals and dished out two assists for the Pilgrims. NEC’s Pat Miles (Brampton, Ontario) finished the game with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Picking up the win in net for NEC was Chris Galluzzo (New London, N.H.) who finished the game with 11 saves.
NEC finished the game outshooting Mount Ida 53-36 and held the 36-22 advantage in ground balls. Mount Ida was 3-for-5 with the extra-man, while NEC was 1-for-4 in man-up situations.
Mount Ida will take the field again on Saturday, March 15 when they open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play by hosting Johnson and Wales University at 1:00 pm at Alumni Field.
NEC returns to action on Tuesday, March 18 when they travel to take on non-conference opponent Nichols College in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
