Castleton State College Spartans 2014 Preview

Castleton State College Spartans

The Castleton State College Spartans finished the 2013 season with a 15-4 record, including 8-0 in North Atlantic Conference play. The Spartans won the 2013 NAC championship which earned them a spot in the Division III NCAA tournament. Unfortunately they lost their 1st round game at Nazareth 4-25. Leading Castleton State in 2014 will be head coach Bo McDougal. This will be his third season as head coach of the Spartans. The 2014 season according to coach McDougal will be a re-building phase. The Spartans graduated 9 talented seniors and they are welcoming 17 newcomers this spring. Coach McDougal went on to say that the expectations this spring are to get better each and every chance we have to take the field in hopes that by May our young guys are ready to play their best lacrosse.

With a ton of newcomers on this springs roster, the Spartans will look to some upperclassman for leadership. Senior captain Owen Hartman will be that guy on the defensive end. Hartman was a 1st team All-NAC selection in 2013. He finished last spring with 68 groundballs and 39 caused turnovers while starting 18 games. According to coach McDougal, “he is in the best shape of his life, and is ready to lead an otherwise young defensive group.” Leading the offense with be junior attack Zach Davidson. He is the reigning NAC Player of the Year as well as a 1st team All-NAC selection. Davidson scored 50 goals and 61 assists in 2013. Through two seasons he has 100 goals and 98 assists in 36 games. Looking to give the Spartans an advantage at the face-off X will be senior Ben Roberts. He won 68% of his face-offs last spring, while scooping up 83 groundballs.

A favorite this spring in the North Atlantic Conference seems to be Maine Maritime. According to coach McDougal, “they return one of the most dynamic players in our league (midfielder Nick Betti) and a group of defenders who have the length and athleticism to impact you as soon as you’re in the box.” A dark-horse in the NAC could be New England College. The Pilgrims have a new coach and have graduated a few key players. Coach McDougal went on to say, “they (NEC) return a group of guys who have won a NAC championship in 2012 and were runner up in 2013.” A few players we will keep an eye on this spring in the NAC will be Nick Betti and Pat Miles. Betti is a junior midfielder at Maine Maritime while Miles is a senior LSM at New England College.
