Maine Maritime Academy Mariners 2014 Preview

Maine Maritime Academy Mariners

The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners finished the 2013 season with a 6-9 overall record but a 5-3 record in North Atlantic Conference play. The Mariners lost in the semifinals of the NAC tournament at Castleton State 7-13. This will be head coach Adam Sherman’s second season at the helm of the Mariners. Heading into 2014 the Mariners are looking to break their streak of making the conference semifinals, they want to get to the NAC championship game.

Looking to get the Mariners to the NAC championship game in 2014 will be Nick Betti and Bronson Guimond. Betti a junior midfield was a 1st team All NAC selection last spring. He was also the Mariners leading scorer with 42 goals and 14 assists. Guimond a junior attack was a 2nd team All NAC selection in 2013 and scored 20 goals and had 9 assists. Helping Betti and Guimond will be newcomers Peter Moore and Nate McLellan. Moore is a midfield and McLellan is a defenseman.

The favorite in the North Atlantic Conference this spring seems to be Castleton State. According to coach Sherman, “they (Castleton State) ran the table last year and they return player of the year Zach Davidson.” A dark-horse this spring in the NAC could be Maine Maritime. The Mariners only graduated 5 seniors and finished in the top 12 of 4 NCAA statistical categories in 2013. Players in the NAC that we will keep an eye on this spring are Zach Davidson from Castleton State and Nick Betti from Maine Maritime. Coach Sherman went on to say, “they are both tough to defend, and work well in their respected offenses.”
