University of New England Nor’easters 2014 Preview

University of New England Nor’easters

The University of New England Nor’easters finished the 2013 season 14-5 under 1st year head coach Charlie Burch. The Nor’easters went on to win the ECAC New England championship with a 12-10 win over fellow Commonwealth Coast Conference member Wentworth. For his very successful first season at UNE, coach Burch was named the CCC Coach of the Year last spring. The expectations for UNE heading into 2014 is to continue to build on the recent success and to continue to challenge the traditional powerhouse teams in the CCC, Endicott and Western New England.

Leading the Nor’easters this spring will be senior midfield Dan O’Gorman. O’Gorman was a 2nd team All-CCC selection last spring, while scoring 20 goals and picking up 17 assists. Looking to help O’Gorman will be senior attack Pat Wolfe, and senior midfield Nick Gross. Wolfe scored 46 goals and 18 assists in 2013, while Gross had 25 goals and 8 assists last spring. Defensively UNE will look to sophmore goalie John Dusel, junior defenseman Andrew Kelly and sophmore LSM Sam Coburn. Kelly picked up 34 groundballs and had 8 caused turnovers, while Coburn had 31 groundballs and 4 caused turnovers. Dusel will step into the starting role this spring for the Nor’easters in goal replacing senior Jay Letendre.

The favorite in the Commonwealth Coast Conference this spring has to be Western New England followed closely by Endicott according to Coach Burch. Coach Burch believes that Wentworth or Roger Williams could be a dark-horse this spring in the CCC.
