Mariano Nets Weekly CAA Honors Following Four-Goal Game
Attackman earns player, co-rookie of the week awards
RICHMOND, Va. – Massachusetts men’s lacrosse freshman Nick Mariano earned CAA Player of the Week and CAA Co-Rookie of the Week after he helped the Minutemen defeat No. 14/9 Ohio State, 12-11 in overtime on Sunday evening. Competing on national television, Mariano tallied four goals in the game broadcast live on NBC Sports Network, with his final strike earning UMass the game-winner with seven seconds left in overtime.
Mariano has six goals through two career games after he struck for a pair of tallies in the season-opening victory at Army on Feb. 8. The Mohegan Lake, N.Y., native shares the rookie of the week award with Drexel’s Cole Shafer, who had four goals during the Dragons’ 11-10 loss to No. 7 Virginia.
The Minutemen host their home opener when Harvard visits Garber Field for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 22.
Fairfield University’s Eric Warden and Michael Roe Earn ECAC Lacrosse Weekly Honors
CENTREVILLE, Mass. – Fairfield University seniors Eric Warden (Glen Mills, Pa.) and Michael Roe (Lutherville, Md.) earned Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Lacrosse League Weekly honors. Warden was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week while Roe was named the Specialist of the Week.
Warden, who shared the honor with Ohio State’s Turner Evans, scored a career-best five goals, converting on six shots on goal, and added an assist for a career-best six points in Fairfield’s 18-8 victory over Delaware. He put the Stags ahead for good in the first quarter with an unassisted tally. He also picked up a ground ball. It is the first ECAC Offensive Player of the Week honor for Warden.
Roe was named for the ECAC Specialist of the Week for the fifth time in his career. Roe was instrumental in Fairfield’s season opening win over Delaware, winning 10 of 24 face-offs for the Stags. The senior also scooped up four ground balls.
Fairfield (1-0), currently ranked 19th in the USILA Poll, returns to action on February 22 when it hosts Manhattan College at 1pm.
Holy Cross’ Sean Wilkinson Named Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player Of The Week
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross sophomore Sean Wilkinson (Ridgefield, Conn.) has been named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week for his six-point performance in the 15-13 season-opening loss at No. 19 St. John’s on Feb. 16, as announced by the league office. This is Wilkinson’s first career Patriot League weekly award.
Wilkinson posted four goals and two assists for six points versus the Red Storm. He also tied for second on the team with four ground balls. He tallied three goals and one assist in the fourth quarter as the Crusaders outscored the Red Storm by a 7-3 margin in the quarter. As a freshman Wilkinson scored one goal in nine games played.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they host Patriot League opponent No. 9 Loyola (Md.) at 1:00 p.m.
