Holy Cross Men’s Lacrosse Drops Season-Opener At #19 St. John’s, 15-13

QUEENS, N.Y. – With the Crusaders trailing 13-6 in the fourth quarter, Holy Cross then outscored the Red Storm 7-2 to cut the lead to two goals but was unable to get any closer as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 19 St. John’s, 15-13, on Sunday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field in non-conference action in the season-opener for both teams. With the loss, the Crusaders start the season 0-1 overall, while the Red Storm begin 1-0 overall.

Sophomore Sean Wilkinson (Ridgefield, Conn.) was outstanding for the Crusaders as he tallied four goals and two assists for six points. Junior captain Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) scored three goals for the Crusaders. The Red Storm were led by Kieran McArdle who posted three goals and four assists for seven points, while Kevin Cernuto tallied three goals and three assists for six points.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 3-0 lead as senior John Daugherty (Stafford, Va.), McKenna and junior Clay Haarmann(Mendham, N.J.) each found the back of the net. Wilkinson assisted on Daugherty’s goal to open the scoring, while freshman Kevin Lux (Manlius, N.Y.) posted his first collegiate point with an assist on Haarmann’s goal which gave the Crusaders a 3-0 advantage. After a goal by Ryan Fitzgerald put the Red Storm on the scoreboard with 4:49 left in the first quarter, Wilkinson netted his first goal of the season to make the score 4-1. The Red Storm responded with three straight goals with the last two of the first quarter and the first of the second quarter to tie the contest at 4-4. With 11:23 remaining in the second quarter, freshman Marc Buermann (West Caldwell, N.J.) scored his first collegiate goal to give the Crusaders a 5-4 lead, but with 4:09 left, Cernuto netted the final goal of the quarter as the two teams went to halftime tied at 5-5.

The Red Storm controlled the third quarter outscoring the Crusaders by a 7-1 margin to take a 12-6 lead. The Crusaders’ lone goal of the quarter was by McKenna for his second of the game. After Chris Fisher extended the lead to 13-6 with 14:43 left in the fourth quarter, the Crusaders netted four straight goals to make it a 13-10 contest. Buermann scored the first goal, while Wilkinson found the back of the net off an assist by junior Jamie Ward (Glen Rock, N.J.) to cut the lead to 13-8. After Wilkinson scored his third goal of the game to post his first collegiate hat-trick, Daugherty netted a man-up goal off a pass from Wilkinson to make the score 13-10 with 10:03 left. With 9:09 remaining, McArdle extended the Red Storm’s lead to 14-10, but Wilkinson’s fourth goal of the game and a goal by junior Chris Smith (Rye, N.Y.) from an assist by senior captain Kyle Kadlick (West Roxbury, Mass.) made it a 14-12 contest with 4:14 remaining. Fitzgerald increased the lead to 15-12 with 2:56 left, while McKenna posted his third goal of the game with just 1:04 remaining to make the score 15-13. The Crusaders won the ensuing faceoff, but a shot by McKenna with 47 seconds left was saved by Joseph Danaher. The Crusaders were unable to get another shot on net for the 15-13 final score.

Sophomore goalie Michael Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) made six saves for the Crusaders, while Danaher posted seven saves. Holy Cross outshot St. John’s, 38-31, while the Red Storm picked up 40 ground balls and the Crusaders tallied 35. St. John’s won 16 of the 30 faceoffs, while the Crusaders went 1-5 on extra-man opportunities and the Red Storm went 0-1.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they host Patriot League opponent No. 12 Loyola (Md.) at 1:00 p.m.
