Johnson & Wales University Wildcats
The Johnson & Wales University men’s lacrosse team will take the field this spring for their first varsity season. Leading the Wildcats in the first season will be head coach Nick Coppola. Coppola is a 2008 graduate of Western New England. He spent that past two seasons as an assistant at Manhattanville and before that was an assistant at Colgate (Division I) and Western New England. Heading into their first varsity season the Wildcats are looking to compete for a playoff spot in the GNAC tournament. Coach Coppola expects his team to be competitive and play for 60 minutes every game and get some wins in 2014. He is also looking for his Wildcats to play their hardest and get better every game.
Leading the Wildcats on the field this spring will be sophomore Tyler Thompson. According to coach Coppola he is an old school do it all type of guy and the most college ready player on their roster. Thompson is a midfield who will face-off, play offense, play defense, and be involved on the EMO. Looking to help Thompson on the offensive side will be Brian Hillenbrand, TJ Consiglio and Keegan Donaher. Defensively Johnson & Wales will look to Brett Leighton and Julian Bandereck.
A favorite in the GNAC this spring could be Mt. Ida. “Mt. Ida has been at the top for so long and you have to assume they will be right back their this year”, according to coach Coppola. He also told us not to overlook Norwich, the defending GNAC Champions. A couple of dark-horses this spring look like Emmanuel and St. Joesph’s. Coach Coppola explained that Emmanuel has done a great job recruiting while St. Joesph’s has a new coach in David Beriau heading into 2014.
