WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team has been picked to finish fourth in the 2014 Patriot League preseason poll as voted on by head coaches and sports information directors from around the league. Also senior captain Corinne Caracausa (North Wales, Pa.) received Preseason All-Patriot League honors.
New Patriot League member Loyola (Md.) has been picked to place first as it earned 15 first-place votes and 127 total points. Four-time defending Patriot League Tournament champion Navy was picked to finish second as it received three first-place votes and 113 total points. Boston University was picked to finish its first Patriot League season in third place with 94 total points, while the Crusaders were fourth with 76 total points. American was picked to finish fifth (72 total points), followed by Lafayette (61 total points), Colgate (47 total points), Lehigh (38 total points) and Bucknell (20 total points). Loyola’s Marlee Paton was named the league’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Navy’s Annie Foky earned Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Caracausa, who earned second team All-Patriot League honors last year, posted 38 ground balls, 16 draw controls and ranked third on the team with 16 caused turnovers last year. She scored four goals and tallied one assist for a total of five points. She ranked fourth in the Patriot League for ground balls per game during the season (2.00). Caracausa, who has been named a 2014 team captain, has played in 45 career games with nine goals and two assists for 11 points, while she also has 58 ground balls, 27 draw controls and 26 caused turnovers.
Last year, the Crusaders concluded the 2013 season with a 9-10 overall record (3-3 Patriot League) as the team made it to the Patriot League Tournament championship game for the second straight season and the sixth time in program history. The Crusaders, who had lost to American by a 16-8 score early in the season, defeated the Eagles, 8-7, in the semifinals and then fell to Navy, 14-4, in the championship game. The Crusaders, who return 17 letterwinners and eight starters, kick off the season at home versus Bryant on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 4:00 p.m.
