Men’s Lacrosse Names Three Captains For Upcoming Season
Goodhue, Izzo and Mooney will lead Minutemen during 2014 campaign
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men’s lacrosse program and head coach Greg Cannella announced goalie Reed Goodhue, midfielder Ryan Izzo and attackman Connor Mooney as team captains for the 2014 season on Monday afternoon. Goodhue and Mooney enter their senior seasons while Izzo is a redshirt-junior.
“We are calling on Reed Goodhue, Ryan Izzo and Connor Mooney, three Massachusetts natives, to be our captains this season,” Cannella said. “Reed is a great leader and role model for the team, Connor is a leader by example on the field and Ryan earned his spot as a captain because he is tremendous motivator.”
Izzo provided 52 groundballs – the second-most on the team – and 10 caused turnovers as a redshirt-sophomore in 2013 while earning NEILA All-New England and CAA All-Conference honors. Only the third player to earn the role of captain as a junior during Cannella’s 20 seasons as the head coach, Izzo also helped the Minutemen win 184-of-316 faceoffs (58.2 percent) as a member of the faceoff unit last season.
Mooney finished fourth on the team in scoring with 29 points recorded on 22 goals and seven assists. He also earned 24 groundballs and five caused turnovers while being named a NEILA All-New England selection as a junior. As a Minuteman, Mooney owns 90 points on 65 goals and 25 assists in 51 games played.
Goodhue has appeared in 15 games as a Minuteman, including five as a junior in 2013. The Topsfield, Mass., native made a career-high 11 saves against Drexel on April 13, 2013, and owns a career 13.82 goals-against average entering his senior season.
The Minutemen open the 2014 regular season at Army on Sunday, Feb. 9 at Noon. Massachusetts will play its first home contest when Harvard travels to Amherst, Mass., for a 1 p.m. game at Garber Field on Feb. 22.
