Here is another review of an Epoch Dragonfly shaft, the E30. The first thing noticeable about this shaft was it’s shape. According to Epoch, it is considered “ergonomic.” I think of it as tear-drop shaped. Here are words direct from Epoch, “Ergonomically designed shaft is for players who want maximum finger tip control and superior overall shaft balance.”
They recommend this shaft for attackmen and middies; as a former attackman, I highly recommend it. While changing hands and dodging from X, the shape of the shaft is helpful. It allows you to know when the head is facing forward and it gives you an advantage coming out of dodging looking to make a feed.
They shaft also has “slip grip” on it which helps with the grip of the shaft. When I played in college, we only had titanium or aluminum shafts, and when it would get wet or cold, you couldn’t get any grip on your shaft. With the slip grip you always have grip, even in bad weather.
The E30 has a flex of 5, which puts it in the middle of flex on the Epoch flex scale. Their scale goes from 1 – 10, 1 being stiff and 10 being soft. The E30 is right in the middle, but that doesn’t mean it can’t flex. Because it is a composite/carbon fiber shaft, it has some flex to it.
The color of the Dragonfly E30 we tested was silver with the lime green stripe. The Gen 4 Dragonfly shafts this year came out in two colors, black and silver. The shaft has the company logo in white, and has the Epoch motto in the lime green stripe. The silver shaft seems a lot cleaner looking then the black shaft. It also reminds me of the days when titanium shafts first came out; they were only in silver. I believe all shafts back when I played in college only came in silver; it wasn’t until later on that shafts came in team colors.
Overall, this a great shaft from Epoch Lacrosse. They have definitely stepped up from last year’s Dragonfly line to this year’s Gen 4 line. The shaft has a very clean look and has a great strength-to- weight ratio. The shaft is light compared to an aluminum shaft, but still has the same strength. It also isn’t too light that you don’t realize you have a shaft in your hands. It is a product that I would definitely recommend and as I said earlier I would recommend it for attackmen. This shaft has seen game usage and wall ball usage and I love it. It is a great shaft from Epoch Lacrosse; look to pick one up at your local lacrosse shop.
