This spring will mark the debut of three new college teams in New England. At the Division I level the Boston University Terriers will begin play in the Patriot League. While two new Division III teams will take the field for the first time this spring: Albertus Magnus College and Johnson & Wales University.
The BU Terriers head coach Ryan Polley announced his incoming recruiting class a few weeks ago. The Terriers will have 31 student-athletes on this springs roster. Most of the players are first year freshman but they do have a couple of sophomores and transfers from other Division I programs. They have yet to release their schedule for the 2014 season, but it should be interesting to see who they play outside of the Patriot League schedule. I hope they get to play some other Division I New England teams this spring.
At the Division III level the Great Northeast Athletic Conference will have two new members this spring. Albertus Magnus out of Connecticut and Johnson & Wales out of Rhode Island. Albertus Magnus announced back in the summer of 2012 the addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse and they both begin play this spring. The men’s team will be lead by head coach Darryl Delia. The Falcons have yet to release their 2014 schedule or their roster. Johnson & Wales just announced the hiring of head coach Nick Coppola on July 15th. Their has been no further information from the Wildcats but they are on track to play this spring.
Last spring the New England Collegiate Conference sponsored their first season of men’s lacrosse. The NECC features Becker College (MA), Daniel Webster College (NH), Mitchell College (CT), Regis College (MA), and Wheelock College (MA). The first lacrosse championship went to Mitchell College in 2013.
Looking ahead to the future, New England will gain another Division I men’s lacrosse team in UMass Lowell. The Riverhawks just hired a head coach in Ed Stephenson link and will begin play in the America East in the spring of 2015.
