CAA Names Jake Smith To Spring Scholar-Athlete Listing
Defenseman tallies league’s men’s lacrosse spot; one of 11 total to earn recognition
RICHMOND, Va. – UMass men’s lacrosse senior defenseman Jake Smith took in his fifth academic honor of the spring on Wednesday when the Colonial Athletic Association announced its Spring Scholar-Athletes of the Year list. Smith tallied the award as the men’s lacrosse recipient among all CAA affiliates and was one of 11 student-athletes to be honored following the spring semester.
A sport management major who graduated with a 3.89 GPA, Smith was a USILA All-American in 2013 with 26 groundballs and 17 caused turnovers at close defense. Smith also tallied First Team All-New England and All-CAA while bringing in USILA Scholar All-America and NEILA Senior Scholar-Athlete laurels. The University of Massachusetts Athletic Department recognized Smith’s academic accomplishments as well, naming the Medfield, Mass., native its Male Spring Scholar-Athlete and Male Senior Scholar-Athlete.
Nominees for the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards must be a starter or important reserve on their team and must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25. The winners were selected by a vote of the media relations directors at each CAA institution.
