2013 Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship
This week, a few New England lacrosse teams begin their quest for a National Championship. Here are the 1st round matchups that will take place on Wednesday, May 8th.
Western New England (11-6) vs. Eastern Connecticut (10-7)
The Golden Bears won the Commonwealth Coast Conference AQ after losing the regular season title to Endicott. WNEU defeated Endicott for the AQ at Endicott, 9-5. Now the Golden Bears get to host Eastern Connecticut in a 1st round NCAA tournament game. The Warriors head into the game with the AQ from the Little East. They were the #2 seed coming into the championship game, and avenged their regular season loss to Keene State. They then defeated Keene State 9-8 for the Little East championship and its AQ. These two teams last met in the regular season during in 2007. WNEU defeated Eastern Connecticut 17-6 in that contest back in 2007.
Prediction: Western New England defeats Eastern Connecticut by 5.
#8 Nazareth (14-4) vs. Castleton (15-3)
The Castleton State Spartans head on the road for their NCAA tournament game. The Spartans will be taking on Nazareth, who won the Empire 8 championship. Castleton is back in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2011, when they lost to Middlebury 7-24 in the 1st round. The Spartans went undefeated in the NAC this season; they were the regular season champions and the conference tournament champions.
Predication: Nazareth defeats Castleton by 8.
#6 Tufts (14-4) vs. Norwich (12-4)
Tufts heads into this 1st round matchup on a four-game win streak. The Jumbos won the NESCAC AQ by defeating Wesleyan 11-6. The victory against Wesleyan avenged a loss to them during the regular season. They are looking to get back to the finals after losing last season in the north final to Cortland State. Norwich heads into this game with the GNAC AQ. The Cadets went undefeated in the regular season and won the conference tournament championship. This will be the first appearance in the NCAA tournament for Norwich.
Predication: Tufts defeats Norwich by 10.
#5 Cabrini (14-3) vs. Springfield (10-7)
The Springfield Pride head on the road for their 1st round game NCAA tournament game. The Pride will face Cabrini, who is currently ranked #5 in the country and also won the CSAC regular season and tournament championship. Springfield is riding a six-game win streak heading into the matchup. The Pride won the Pilgrim League regular season and tournament championship. This is Springfield’s sixth straight trip to the Division III NCAA Tournament.
Predication: Cabrini defeats Springfield in OT.
