NEILA Division III Poll, Week 12

NESCAC Champion Tufts Returns to Pre-Season Position As Unanimous #1 in Final NEILA Poll

BEVERLY, Mass. —  Tufts University has returned to the top of the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse  Association (NEILA) Division III poll. The Jumbos began the year as the unanimous preseason favorite and that’s how they end up in the final NEILA poll of the 2013 men’s lacrosse season.

By completing an 11-6 victory over Wesleyan in the 2013 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championship game, Tufts, who dropped in the poll after two consecutive losses to start the season, now return to the top of the regional rankings for the first time since April 8th.

In a familiar trend, NESCAC schools make up the top three spots, as semifinalists Middlebury and Connecticut College sit at numbers two and three, respectively. Middlebury Was upset by #4 seeded Wesleyan on their home turf, while Conn. College fell to the Jumbos in Vermont on Saturday afternoon.

Wesleyan remains at the number four spot despite advancing to the NESCAC Championship, and they are joined in a tie there with Western New England, who came to Beverly and knocked off top-seeded Endicott 9-5 to capture their second consecutive CCC title.

There was another tie at the sixth position, where Endicott ended up after their championship defeat. They share the spot with Springfield, who moves up from #9 after beating Babson 14-3 in the Pilgrim League finals to earn the automatic qualifier to the NCAA’s.

Eastern Connecticut State was another team that won a championship on the road, as they captured the Little East Confernece (LEC) crown against top-seeded Keene State, with a slim 9-8 victory. The Warriors move into the eighth position, pushing their rivals Keene State down to the tenth spot.

The Polar Bears of Bowdoin are the only team in the top ten not involved in their conference semifinals. Bowdoin was edged 8-7 in overtime in their NESCAC semifinal game by the fourth-seeded Wesleyan Cardinals.

The NEILA weekly poll is voted on by a committee of coaches from the 53 Division III member schools.
