PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s lacrosse team hosted St. John’s in its final home game of the 2013 season on Saturday, April 20 in Providence, R.I. Prior to the start of the game, the Class of 2013 was honored for its accomplishments and contributions to Providence College and the lacrosse program. In a back-and-forth game, the Friars were edged by the Red Storm, 16-13. The Friars move to 8-7 (1-4 BIG EAST), while St. John’s improves to 8-4 (3-3 BIG EAST). Junior Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) notched his eighth hat-trick of the season to pace the Friars.
Providence found its way on the scoreboard one minute into the game when sophomore Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.) buried a feed from freshman Tim Lavallee (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). St. John’s responded with back-to-back goals from Colin Keegan at 11:55 and 10:25 to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) tallied his 26th goal of the season at 8:42 to tie the game, 2-2. Keegan added two goals for the Red Storm to give St. John’s a 4-2 advantage with 5:50 left to play in the first quarter. Providence went on a 3-0 run to close the quarter and carried a 5-4 advantage into the second 15 minutes of play. Senior JT Weber (West Hartford, Conn.) tallied goals at the 4:51 mark in addition to the 1:12 mark. Freshman Brendon McGuire (Wycoff, N.J.) found the back of the cage with 3:13 left to play on a pass from Wright.
The Friars opened the second quarter with a goal from Wright to increase their lead to two, 6-4 (13:10). Keegan brought the Red Storm within one with his fifth goal of the game at 12:07. Kieran McArdle evened the game at six goals apiece (10:01). Providence added two goals in the final seven minutes of the quarter and held an 8-6 advantage over St. John’s at the half.
St. John’s evened the game at 8-8 with back-to-back goals from Keegan and Kevin Cernuto at 12:06 and 11:09, respectively. Providence regained the lead with 7:55 remaining in the third quarter when Weber notched his third goal of the game (9-8). Keith Sitzer answered with a goal to tie the game, 9-9 (6:22). The Red Storm held a 10-9 lead with 1:42 left to play, but a goal from Barton tied the game at 10 goals apiece headed into the final 15 minutes of play.
Alex Lagodich opened the final quarter with a goal at the 14:28 mark to give the Red Storm an 11-10 edge. The Friars would not be able to catch up to St, John’s. In the final 13 minutes, the Red Storm outscored Providence, 5-3. St. John’s held on to its 16-13 advantage until the end of regulation.
Wright and Barton have tallied at least one point in each of the Friars’ 15 games. Wright finished the game with five points on four goals and one assist. In addition, Weber tallied his fourth hat-trick of the season.
Junior Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.) continued his success at the face-off “X,” winning 20-of-30 draws and collecting nine ground balls. The junior face-off specialist holds a .504 win percentage on the season.
Freshman goalie Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) played all 60 minutes between the pipes and recorded seven saves. St. John’s senior goalie, Jeff Lowman finished with 11 saves, eight of which came in the second half.
The Friars held the advantage in shots, 39-32 and ground balls, 32-23.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, April 27 when the Friars travel to Villanova, Pa. to take on conference foe Villanova. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
