Gulls Into Top Three In New England After Victory Over Previous NEILA Leaders Tufts
BEVERLY, Mass. — While for the second straight week no team dropped from the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s (NEILA) Division III Poll, Endicott College moved up three spots from number six to number three after a 12-10 home victory over Tufts, previously ranked first in New England and #4 in the country. The Gulls have now won seven consecutive games and hold a 10-3 record, still without a loss in the region.
The Jumbos, who fell to #7 in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) National Poll, fall to third in the region, and make way at the top for their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Middlebury College. Despite losing to Tufts, Middlebury bounced back and moved to 9-3 on the season with a victory over Trinity, while the Jumbos will try to finish their NESCAC schedule out strong with games at Wesleyan and Bowdoin.
Those two teams, along with Connecticut College, comprise the #4 – #6 spots in this week’s rankings. Connecticut College dropped one spot to fourth with a 5-4 loss to Hamilton, while Bowdoin slipped past Wesleyan, 6-5, in another low scoring affair. With the results of that game, the Polar Bears held firm at the fifth spot, while Wesleyan dropped two spots down to #6.
Western New England picked up a win over a pesky Roger Williams team that also gave Endicott trouble this week, then had no trouble with University of New England and moved up to the seventh position with a 7-5 record on the year. They are followed by Keene State, also up one spot after winning their third consecutive game and Bates, who dipped to #9 despite edging out Hamilton in another low-scoring, one-goal NESCAC contest.
Springfield, the odds on favorites to win the Pilgrim League, remained in the tenth spot with an easy victory over Mass. Maritime.
The NEILA weekly poll is voted on by a committee of coaches from the 53 Division III member schools.
