WORCESTER, Mass. – With the game tied at 10-10 with 9:27 left in the fourth quarter, the Friars then outscored the Crusaders by a 2-1 margin as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team fell to Providence, 12-11, at Holy Cross Field on Saturday evening in non-conference action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 6-7 overall, while the Friars improve to 8-5 overall.
Sophomore Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) scored four goals for the Crusaders. Sophomore Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) tallied three goals and one assist for four points.
After Andrew Barton gave the Friars an early 1-0 lead, McKenna scored an extra-man goal off a pass from sophomore Conor Shanahan (Potomac, Md.) to tie the contest at 1-1. Providence then responded by netting three straight goals to move out to a 4-1 advantage. Senior captain John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored the last goal of the first quarter off a pass by senior captain James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) to make it a 4-2 contest. The Friars extended their lead to five goals by netting three straight to make the score 7-2. But the Crusaders then answered with three consecutive goals of their own to cut the lead to 7-5. Kennedy, McKenna and Haarmann each found the back of the net. With just one second left in the second quarter, Robert Caffrey scored his second goal of the contest as Providence took an 8-5 lead to the half.
The Crusaders tallied the first three goals of the third quarter to tie the game at 8-8. Haarmann scored once and McKenna scored twice giving him four goals for the day. After a goal by Sean Wright gave the Friars a one-goal lead, Kennedy tied the game at 9-9 with just eight seconds remaining in the third quarter. Haarmann gave the Crusaders their only lead of the evening when he scored his third goal of the contest for the 10-9 advantage with 11:28 left in the fourth quarter. But the Friars then netted three consecutive goals to move out to a two-goal lead including a goal by Greg FitzMaurice with 4:10 remaining to make the score 12-10. Hannan made it a 12-11 contest with 2:17 left when he found the back of the net off a pass from Kennedy. With just under 10 seconds remaining, Hannan took a shot that was saved by Jack Connelly to secure the 12-11 victory for the Friars.
Freshman goalie Michael Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) made 12 saves, while Connelly posted nine saves to earn the win and improve to 8-5 on the season. Holy Cross outshot Providence, 34-31, while the Friars secured 40 ground balls and the Crusaders tallied 18. Providence won 19 of 26 face-offs, while the Crusaders went 2-2 on extra-man opportunities and the Friars went 1-2.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 20, for a home at Holy Cross Field versus Patriot League opponent Army at 6:00 p.m. on Senior Night.
